can weight loss occur during pregnancy | The best things in life are free

can weight loss occur during pregnancy

My husband and I have had a tight past couple years. We didnt think we made a lot of money while he was an E-5 on a submarine. We lived in Hawaii with a toddler and-- I admit it-- I am horrible at sticking to a budget. Well, moving to North Carolina for the STA-21 program, we lost our sea pay, sub pay, nuke pay, sea pay kicker, COLA... And then we had twins. And moved locally-- twice. Of course we feel that the STA-21 program is worth it and we are exceedingly grateful that the military is paying Hubby to get his degree. However, weve had many, many, many late night talks about the budget. Weve struggled over how we should spend our money and what expenses are necessary. It is amazing what I feel is necessary and what he feels is necessary.

For instance, last semester, he took a very heavy load at school, being his senior year. He left in the morning before preschool started and came home after the kids were in bed. Near the end of the semester, he wasnt getting home until 10 or 11 oclock at night. Most of his classes involved group projects. Since most of the students in his class are single college-age kids who work to pay for school, it was hard finding time that all the group members could get together. He would meet group members weeknights after they got off work and most Sunday evenings. The only upside to this schedule was taking the kids to campus to meet him for the odd-mealtime. They love seeing where Daddy "works" and getting tours. Anyways, I was taking care of the kids from the time they woke up to the time they went to bed all by myself, plus trying to accommodate Hubbys schedule, staying up later to see him and driving the kids over to campus when possible. I was burning myself out. I hired a weekly baby-sitter. Im telling you, that became my favorite day of the week. I loved knowing that she would come over to feed the kids and put them to bed, even though it was just that one day. I loved having another adult to chat with while I got my things ready to go. Even better, I loved how much the kids loved having her over. She played games with them and made the evening activities feel fun and new. That day renewed me and gave me something to look forward to. Since Hubby wasnt home with the kids all day, it was harder for him to understand justifying the expense. To his credit, he didnt say anything negative to me about it. That simple act of supporting me in the expense really made me fall in love with him all over again.

This semester isnt as stressful as last semester. The bulk of his courses are electives toward his degree. Being a mathematically minded person, it is much more time-consuming reading than he prefers. The thing I like about it is that he can read at home. A lot of days he locks himself in our bedroom to do homework-- but hes home. He doesnt need to meet up with groups or get help with equations. Weve continued having a baby-sitter come over. Weve gone out to dinner together, ran errands, and spent time with our oldest outside the house. It has been a blessing for us. (I really think the toddlers, especially, are starting to love the sitter more than us! Haha!) This expense has fallen into the category of something we can both agree on.

Other things arent so clear, like ordering in, picking up take-out, or eating out. The expense of feeding all five of us out is much greater than when it was just Hubby and I eating out. Even then, we felt that it wasnt a justified expense. Eating out is fun-- and should stay fun-- but it is expensive. Lately, I havent had the time to cook for all of us. Im so sick of fast food and frozen food options. They all start tasting the same. I havent had time for grocery shopping, so Ive been tossing together simple meals when I can. Some meals have been delicious, like the broiled salmon with the buttery, crispy skin. I need to take some time to buy ingredients for meals I can make and freeze. I agree that the expense for eating out isnt always worth the convenience. When I get behind the ball, I dont know how to get the kids to calm down so I can prepare something to get on the table. I prefer for eating out to be a fun family experience, where we feel like it is a fun treat, not hungry, fussy kids struggling through a meal. I need to get my act together; really, I need to pull out the crock pot again!

Nothing can divide two people like finances. We can have a wonderful evening with the kids, but once they are in bed and he logs on to the bank, the questions start. I get defensive, he gets frustrated, and there is an argument. So far, every challenge in our marriage has brought us closer. This money challenge has been no different. While it hasnt always been easy, we have been able to communicate with each other our points of view. Ive told him where Im struggling and hes explained where hes struggling. It helps so much to understand where the other person is coming from.

So what am I loving this Valentines Day? My husband. Hes my best friend and we are living this life together. We dont always agree with each other, but we respect each others opinion and do our best to work as a team.

And, in all honesty, we love, love, love our baby-sitters! :) Happy Valentines Day!

pregnancy weight loss how long

Male Factor Fertility and Exercise

As the old saying goes, "everything in moderation".
We know that women shouldnt do high impact and stenuous exercise while they are trying to conceive or already pregnancy.  This holds true for men and exercise as well. Moderate exercisers had the best sperm motility. Read more:

(HealthDay News) — Men who get moderate amounts of exercise have better sperm motility than men who are less or more physically active, a new study finds.

Motility refers to the sperm’s ability to swim and move towards an egg, an important factor in fertility.

The study by researchers at Yamaguchi University in Japan included 215 men who provided semen samples and information about their physical activity levels. The men were divided into three groups: strenuous, moderate or light exercise. Age and body mass index were similar among the three groups.

The moderate-exercise group had the highest average sperm motility and the fewest men with less than 40 percent sperm motility (14.3 percent), while 31 percent of those in the light-exercise group and 27 percent of those in the strenuous-exercise group had less than 40 percent sperm motility.

ask my husband, after his early-morning shift with Amelia, how age has changed his experience of parenthood. Yes, he finds it more relentless, he says, but is more appreciative of the bits he forgot first time around; the moments of intimacy rocking a small baby to sleep, their physicality, the way their arms cling to the back of your neck; all that disappears with bolshy eight- and 10-year-olds. It is lovely, too, seeing the first signs of a gang emerging – the three of them slouched on the sofa, Amelia wedged between the older two, glued to the iPad.
It also turns out that what I was most apprehensive about – the yawning age gap – has been the best thing of all. Louis and Evie will remember much more about their sisters early life than they do about each others, and Ive appreciated the mutually exclusive time during school hours; its rather like having an only child. This mid-life baby will be lucky enough to have two older siblings she can fight and compete with but also turn to for advice, love and support – with her exhausted ageing parents, good thing too.

rapid weight loss during pregnancy | Making the best

rapid weight loss during pregnancy

"In that lonely place Frodo for the first time fully realized his homelessness and danger. He wished bitterly that his fortune had left him in the quiet beloved Shire."
-JRR Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

Sometimes I really chafe under the military lifestyle. I try not to and there really are so many things I am grateful for. But sometimes, it rubs against me like a pair of ill-fitting shoes. My husband and I have been discussing buying a home sometime down the road. On a submarine wives forum, a bunch of wives were talking about their home buying experiences. Some families have had great success buying along the way, either selling or renting out as they go. Some families have not had success and have suffered great loss. Weve been renting for almost six years now and it is getting old, especially as we add more children in the equation. My husband wants to own his own house; I just hate renting. (We arent confident that those are good reasons to jump into such a large investment-- haha!) Either way, we look longingly at our civilian friends who have bought homes and wonder what it would be like, buying a home in a community and planning to live there for years to come.

Before we had our first child, we talked about how sweet it would be to plant a tree, the same age as him and watch them grow together. Can you imagine, our sweet little man backing out of the driveway to pick up his prom date under the shade of his tree? But that will never pass. At each of our homes, weve had to move away from memories. Our very first apartment, where I waited as a newlywed for a lonely, silent month by myself before I heard word that his submarine had finally pulled into port. The same place that we decided to have a baby and where we brought home our firstborn son. (After this I moved with our son to my parents house for seven months while his submarine changed homeports.) Our second home, a duplex in base housing. So many good memories in that home-- visiting family, birthday parties, brunches, dinners, girls nights in, and carrying my phone with me everywhere I went, hoping for it to ring. Our third home, an apartment, where we decided we wanted another baby and were surprised with twins! I stood in front of our pantry door as my husband took pictures of my growing belly each week. We moved to our fourth home, another apartment, before we they were born. This is where we brought home our newborns and got a dog. Long days spent at home, loving on our three boys and figuring out how to get everything done. And now our fifth home, a rental house. This is where our toddlers learned to walk and our oldest learned to write. These walls have watched our children discover each other and the joys of brotherhood.

Our belongings bear the weight of preserving our memories. Our couch-- our first piece of furniture bought as newlyweds-- now sinking and sagging in familiar places reminds us of those early days, watching movies with our roommate and later sitting feeding and burping babies. Our kitchen table bears the scars from late night card games, children learning to use forks, and my many attempted art projects (people like me should not read Martha Stewart Living magazine). My books, which I have alphabetized and organized each place weve lived, have comforted me night after night, always present whenever I need them. But no matter how much sentimental value befalls our things, we know that the most important things arent included in our household goods. This past PCS, our couch was packed with an open bag of individually wrapped chocolates. One of our bookcases was not emptied-- just wrapped in paper and packed stacked full of books (no, that does not bode well for the bookcase). We love our things; we just have to be able to let them go. Breathe in, breathe out, and fill out the proper paperwork to replace the damaged items. Create new memories.

And this is where I start to chafe. I dont want to always create new memories, or look for the bright side, or make the best. I want the memories I made. I want my kids to have those prized childhood possessions, whatever they may be. My heart will break in two when we, yet again, tear down my sons art work wall. I want that spot on the lawn that the grass never grows. I want my younger boys to have the teachers my older boys had. And the military friends we have made will never live nearby. Our friends hearts-- who love us just as dearly-- wish for their hometowns, their dear ones, their own memories of the past and hoped for future. We met them on the road, fellow travelers in the military life. We clung to each other and made the best. Sometimes it is hard to realize how wonderful things were until youve said good-bye and are moving to the next assignment.

More than memories, I chafe under distance. My heart is in so many places and sometimes I ache with the number of people I miss and love. I want my kids to play with their niece. My friends kids are growing up and I havent seen them in years. Will these children I love even remember me after years apart? It will be starting over when I see them again. And Ive never even met several of my friends children. One of my girlfriends has toddlers-- toddlers!-- and Ive never met them. I saw her last two and a half years ago. How does time slip away so quickly? I go through the day and long to share a good passage from a book with my literary girlfriend, over high tea, of course. I long to return the kindness of the most generous woman I know. I long for wine and long talks with friends I do not live near. There is so much to talk about! And time keeps slipping away.

I sometimes sit and think about what I cant have-- a home in a community with all my friends and family living nearby-- and I feel an ache in the center of my chest. But I dont need land. The earth and walls cant hold our families memories. I dont need to see my friends every day, week, month, or year for them to be close to my heart. I dont have to hold my niece and kiss her whenever I want to love her. Friendship and love overcome all these things. Instead, I choose to look forward with longing and anticipation to the next time I see these people, when I can hug them and tell them, "It has been too long!" I choose to be grateful for the time we have now, for the good things we had in the past.

One day we will have a home, even if that is after retirement, and we will fill it with the memories we have made along the way. My hope is that those memories are good and that I did always make the best-- even when it was hard.

weight lost during pregnancy boy or girl | Let it be

weight lost during pregnancy boy or girl

"When I find myself in times of trouble,
Mother Mary comes to me.
Whispers words of wisdom,
Let it be.
Let it be; let it be; let it be; let it be.
There will be an answer.
Let it be."?
-The Beatles

After such a stressful month, it was time to give ourselves a break, get out of our routines, and have fun together. My parents graciously let us use their time share again (we used it last year as well). Even better, they came with us. I dont know if you ever outgrow wanting your momma when youre broken hearted. It was so good seeing them and our family had a great time at the indoor waterpark, especially our oldest. Whenever we had down time in our room-- like when the toddlers were napping-- my hubby would take D down to the arcade where they had a ropes course and a blacklight miniature golf course as well. I dont think D wanted to leave! It was good for us to just forget about everything else for awhile and have fun.

I forgot to take pictures of the timeshare, which was wonderful. It was bigger than our old 3-bedroom apartment. My parents had the master suite, which had a jacuzzi tub and a large walk-in shower. There was a second bathroom by the second and third bedrooms, but the kids loved bathing in my parents big bathtub! We slept in the large second bedroom on a king bed. Im not sure how many times my husband and I said we are excited to buy a king bed while we were there (we currently have a queen). The boys all shared the third bedroom. We brought the toddlers packnplays and wedged them in the empty spaces of the room. D slept in a double bed. Some mornings they were up earlier than usual, but, for the most part, they slept together great. (This gave us hope because we are hoping to get all three of them in one room when we move to South Carolina.) It was nice to have a room to ourselves. We brought our air mattress with us just in case it didnt work having all the boys in the same room and D needed to sleep on our floor. I loved that the timeshare was basically a 3-bedroom apartment. The boys slept down a hallway, away from the living space, making naptime possible even away from home. I also loved the full kitchen. We made BLTs one night and bread pudding another night; we also ate breakfast and lunch in the timeshare. We could walk indoors from our room to the timeshare, so, even though there was snow outside, the boys were in swim trunks and flip flops for most of the trip! D loved the waterpark immediately. The toddlers took awhile to warm up to the loud music and shrieks from people riding the slides or in the wave pool when it started up; I think they were a little over stimulated. I also think they are a little unsure about how they felt in the water. D was a toddler living in Hawaii; we were beach bums togethers. The toddlers, however, only went to the pool twice last summer! Their "water experience" is exclusively from the bathtub.

Here they are in the kids area with their daddy:

Here are a few more pictures taken on my camera from the vacation:

?It was a great trip. My parents even drove home with us to stay for a couple days after the waterpark. I really needed the family time and the away time. Thank you to my parents for letting us use your timeshare. Thank you for spending the week with us. We had a great time!! :)

weight loss during pregnancy risks | Do as the toddlers do

weight loss during pregnancy risks

I am embarrassed to admit this, but up until recently I thought that our children were the additions to my husband and Is life, that we were supposed to adapt them to the rhythm of our lives. Surveying our house the other day, I realized how foolish this was. Whos calling the shots here? So Im re-writing the game plan. As they say, when in Rome, do as the toddlers do.

1. Reason is not real.
Who cares if you need a nap because company is coming over later? Who cares if you are only crying because you are tired? Who cares if there isnt more after all? These "reasons" are not tangible things and therefore they do not exist.

2. Throwing is a form of communication.
Whether you are done with your meal or showing your brother a cool toy he cant touch, throwing is a great way to get your message across.

3. Use your body language.
Take this very literally. If you are feeling down, flail on the floor. If you are excited or happy, run in circles with your hands in the air. If you want something, throw the weight of your body in the direction of the desired object. Arching your back is the absolute best way to show your dissatisfaction or to simply liven up an otherwise boring afternoon.

4. Cleanliness is next to weakness.
Wiping your nose, changing your diaper, or willingly taking your clothes off before bathtime are all signs that you were too weak to run away. The only time a clean nose and fresh baby powder scent is appropriate is after an epic battle. In that case, they are badges of honor.

5. Safety isnt just fun; its your job.
Books stacked on a case are a hazard. Drinks left willy-nilly on an end table are a hazard. Cell phones left emitting dangerous radiation on the couch are a hazard. Trash cans-- anywhere in the home-- are a hazard. Objects peaking over the edge of the counter are a hazard. It is your job to safely lay these objects out on the floor and thoroughly inspect them. Is that dog food or poison? There is only one way to find out.

6. Let your voice be heard.
Everywhere. Dont let the man silence you. Point and scream energetically at every balloon you see-- perhaps the others in your party havent seen it yet. If you are being reprimanded, throw your head back and cry loudly, "YOU CANNOT KEEP ME DOWN!" Church is a wonderful place to really stretch your vocal cords; the acoustics are fabulous.

7. Control your own destiny.
Is your stroller heading to Gymboree or the Gates of Mordor? Are you zipping past shiny objects on the ground or interesting benches that need to be climbed on? Dont let them strap you in! These things should be avoided at all costs: carseats, strollers, high chairs (especially restaurant high chairs), and shopping carts. It is near to impossible to escape these things once the straps close around you.

8. Sharing is for others.
Always insist on sharing. Your friends need to learn to share their toys with you. Your siblings need to learn to share the wagon. Your parents need to learn to share their food. But remember this: the people you welcome into your home are lucky you are sharing your time and oxygen with them. They do not need to touch your things.

9. Persistance pays off.
So someone says no to you when you climb on the kitchen table. Will they say no if you do it again? And again? And again? And if they really dont want you playing with whatever is in that cabinet, would they continue to store it in that cabinet?

10. Exercise each and every day.
Pre-bedtime runs are important; make sure to sprint in the opposite direction of the house as your bedroom when bedtime is announced. As soon as you get out of the car, take off running; parking lots have ample space to stretch your legs. Another great place is the mall. You can get a lot of exercise in doing figure eights around shopping racks or dashing from store to store. The best work outs are random. Run full speed in one direction then quickly cut left or turn around completely. If anyone tries to stop you, pretend you are on a tread mill while you are in their arms; that form of exercise is known as "cardio" and can be just as beneficial. Note: never work out with anyone; you will get less of a work out. If you find you are running with your brother, break away. Your health is important.
