post baby weight loss journey | LIGHT AND FERTILITY

post baby weight loss journey

Pregnancy Over 40, The Light/Dark Connection

I frequently write about the importance of sleep and paying attention to the balance between light and dark on your bodys cycle.
This article does a good job of explaining the importance of light during the day and the earths natural rhythms. Read more:

When you are in sync with the earths natural rhythms and cycles you can boost your fertility. If you work against natures rhythms as many of us do, then you may be harming your delicate fertility balance.

Your biological clock is intimately linked to your reproductive system by utilizing the same hormones that trigger ovulation and sperm maturation. Therefore both women and men are affected by respecting or ignoring their natural rhythms.

Importance of Bright Light

Getting adequate sunlight or other full spectrum light during the day is key to optimum fertility for many reasons. Vitamin D is created in our bodies when we are exposed to sunlight and Vitamin D deficiencies have been linked to infertility.

Adequate sunlight also helps regulate circadian rhythms which allow you to sleep better at night. Regular exposure to the sun also helps you maintain a strong immune system which is necessary to maintain a healthy pregnancy. Women who get more sunlight also have consistent and stronger menstrual cycles.

Finally, bright light prevents your body from overproducing melatonin which suppresses fertility. This might explain why it is easier for women to conceive in southern regions and during the summer months.

post pregnancy weight loss guide | HOW VITAMIN C CAN HELP FERTILITY

post pregnancy weight loss guide

Pregnancy Over 40 and Vitamin C

Another good reason to eat those colorful fruits and vegetables.
Many women who suffer from infertility and recurrent miscarriage may have something called "luteal phase defect" where hormone levels are insufficient in the second half of their menstrual cycle. Here is an article which talks about a study on vitamin C and how it may help with this problem:

One hundred fifty women with luteal phase defect seeking medical attention for infertility were enrolled in the current study. Levels of estrogen and progesterone were monitored for three menstrual cycles. The participants were randomly assigned to receive 750 mg of vitamin C per day or no treatment beginning at the onset of the third cycle of the study. During the third cycle, progesterone levels increased significantly in women receiving vitamin C but did not change in women receiving no treatment. Estrogen levels also increased in the treatment group but not the untreated group. Moreover, there was a significantly higher pregnancy rate in the vitamin C group than in the untreated group: 25% of the women receiving vitamin C became pregnant within six months of starting treatment, while only 11% of untreated women became pregnant in the same time period.

The results of this preliminary study suggest that vitamin C improves hormone levels and increases fertility in some women with luteal phase defect. Placebo-controlled trials are needed to confirm the benefits observed in this study and to identify the amount of vitamin C that has the best effect on luteal phase defect. Vitamin C is inexpensive and safe, and could be useful as an early intervention in the treatment of infertility due to luteal phase defect.

pregnancy weight loss after giving birth | CAN CO Q10 HELP YOU GET PREGNANT

pregnancy weight loss after giving birth

Get Pregnant Naturally With The Help Of Co-Q10

I have heard about CoQ10 for a number of conditions, but this is the first time Ive heard about how it may help fertility by actually improving egg function and quality.
Co-Q10 may help egg quality by preventing damage and help cellular energy.
 Read more:

Mitochondria need co-enzyme Q10 to make energy. The vitamin is also a powerful anti-oxidant that may prevent mitochondrial DNA damage, Casper said.

Co-enzyme Q10s production by the body also decreases as we get older, starting around age 25.

"One of the theories about why we get old and die in the first place is that our cells just run out of energy — the mitochondria stop working properly and theres just not enough energy for cellular function so organs start to fail," Casper said. "A simple explanation could be that theres not enough fuel from the co-Q10 around."

In a pilot study using 52-week old mice — mid-life for a mouse, and the equivalent of 40 to 50 for a human — Caspers team gave half the group co-enzyme Q10, and the other half a placebo. Next they compared eggs retrieved from both groups of mice with eggs from 10-week old mice.
"What we found was that just treating the mice with co-Q10 we got more eggs when we gave them fertility drugs," Casper said. The nuclear spindles that pull the chromosomes apart were more like those in young eggs. The litter size was bigger, and the eggs from the vitamin-treated mice had improved mitochondrial function.

Even more surprising, when the researchers examined the mouse ovaries, there were significantly more egg follicles in the old mice treated with the co-Q10 — suggesting, Casper said, "that we actually were able to delay the onset of the equivalent of menopause in the mice."

baby weight loss and gain after birth | GLUTEN INFERTILITY AND MISCARRIAGE

baby weight loss and gain after birth

Gluten May Affect Some Womens Fertility

I keep hearing more and more about how gluten may be the culprit behind infertility and miscarriage.

Here is an article that explain what gluten is and how it can wreak havoc on your digestive system.

Celiac disease, and gluten intolerance are both known to be important causes of infertility and miscarriage which can easily be remedied by a gluten free diet. Celiac disease can be tested for with a blood test which is relatively accurate as long as you have been consuming gluten regularly in the month or so before the test day. As soon as you cut gluten out of your diet, the volume of of anti-gluten antibodies that your body produces drops, which can make the test misleading.

See Also My Series on Foods For Fertility (www.getpregnantover40.com)

Many women are sensitive to gluten containing grains, but do not have an autoimmune reaction to gluten making testing even more tricky. Gluten sensitivity testing can be expensive and is not usually covered by health insurance. Many women simply decide to try a month or two on a strict gluten free diet to see how they feel. Many times they are pleasantly surprised by both how easy - and enjoyable - a gluten free diet can be, and by how good they feel often in unexpected ways...

Recently one of my fe
rtility coaching clients relayed how she had had a series of unfortunate miscarriages - all preceded by uterine growth retardation - and yet had also had one successful pregnancy which she carried to term. When I raised the issue of celiac testing (uterine growth restriction is common in celiac pregnancies) it turned out that this one miraculous pregnancy was conceived - and carried - during a period on a gluten free diet pursued as a health kick. Gluten can be a powerful saboteur of fertility and fertility can quickly return when it is removed.

Becoming pregnant at age 47 wasnt a worry for Robin Brussel. "I enjoyed every minute of being pregnant," she said.
Still, it was a surprise. "I thought I was going through pre-menopause," she said. "It just happened."
Brussel, now 48, gave birth in December to a 6-pound, 10-ounce boy named Noah she carried for 39 weeks. He was a cesarean birth, as were her four older children, ages 18 to 28. Noah was the first child born to her and her husband, Mark Brussel, 56. Theyve been married nearly four years.

baby lose weight during growth spurt | D C MAY CAUSE SCARRING ASHERMANS SYNDROME

baby lose weight during growth spurt

Trying To Get Pregnant Naturally?  A D&C May Cause Scarring and Affect Fertility

Ever heard of Ashermans syndrome? It can be caused by a previous D & C which can be done for a number of reasons from heavy bleeding to an incomplete miscarriage.

SEE ALSO: DO YOU NEED A D&C AFTER MISCARIAGE? (Getpregnantover40.com)

I recall being advised to have a D & C after one of my miscarriages. I didnt want to because I didnt really want any sharp instruments inside my one and only uterus, but I wound up having it anyway because it appeared that the pregnancy tissue was still growing even though there was no heartbeat and the fetus wasnt viable. Here is more information about how adhesions can affect your fertility:

From the article:

Ashermans syndrome is a type of adhesion - where bands of scar-like tissue form inside the body between two surfaces, causing them to stick together. Adhesions are a common problem, affecting 93 per cent of patients who undergo surgery.

All the abdominal and pelvic organs - which are most susceptible to adhesions - are wrapped together in a clear membrane, the peritoneum. When this is traumatised either by infection or surgery, it triggers an inflammatory response, stimulating the growth of fibrous scar tissue. Ashermans is the term given to adhesions in the womb.

The problem is triggered by a dilation and curettage (D&C), a standard procedure used to clear the womb after a miscarriage, or when the placenta is retained after childbirth or a termination, says Adrian Lower, a consultant gynaecologist and one of only a handful of Ashermans specialists in the UK.

An ultrasound revealed parts of the placenta had embedded into Sophies womb. Left untreated, it could lead to serious infection

He says: During the procedure, a spoon-shaped instrument [a curette] is used to scrape the uterus lining.

Its thought that Ashermans occurs when this is done too forcefully, he says. Around 100,000 procedures are carried out each year, with five per cent resulting in Ashermans.

weight loss journey during pregnancy | LUTEAL PHASE DEFECT AND VITAMIN C

weight loss journey during pregnancy

Luteal Phase Defect and Vitamin C

I have always associated vitamin C with the immune system.
This article, however talks about how vitamin C may also play a role in regulating hormones which may hep with conditions like luteal phase defect.  Luteal phase defect is when your hormones fall too fast in the second half of your cycle.

SEE ALSO: FOODS FOR FERTILITY (getpregnantover40.com)

From the article:

A number of factors can cause luteal phase defect. Recent findings have suggested that oxidative damage may play a role, and antioxidant levels, such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and glutathione, were found to be significantly lower in women with luteal phase defect and recurrent miscarriages than in healthy women. The potential benefits of antioxidant vitamin supplementation have not been previously explored.
