post pregnancy weight loss journey | SPRING IT MAY ENHANCE FERTILITY

post pregnancy weight loss journey

Pregnancy Over 40, Spring and Fertility

Since spring has sprung and, along with it (at least where I live), some very nice weather, I thought Id share an article that connects spring with everything from elevated moods to increased fertility. Read more:

Scientists know that when seasons change, the retina — the part of the eye connected to the brain by the optic nerve — naturally reacts to variations in the amount of daylight. This triggers hormonal changes.

Particularly important is the adjustment in melatonin, a hormone that affects our mood and how we sleep. As a result of light changes, the body naturally produces less melatonin during spring, causing a lift in mood, a reduced desire to sleep, an increase in sexual appetite and a need to eat less.

New findings published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, by researchers at the University of Massachusetts medical school, have also proved that activity levels rise as the days get longer. After analysing the exercise habits and food intakes of almost 600 men and women over a year, Professor Yunsheng Ma found that most subjects gained up to 2lb (1kg) in winter; they ate lots of carbohydrate and exercised little. Come spring, however, activity levels soared and calorie intake dropped. It seemed that the only reason for this was the change in season.

This is partly a psychological effect but also physical. Evolutionary biologists believe that our bodies are programmed to be more active as the hormone mix changes with more light. Released from the chemical messages that make us withdraw in winter, the body feels energised, ready to hunt for food and to give birth.

Spring is also the time, supposedly, when a young man’s thoughts turn to sex. And it is true that men are more fertile at this time of year than any other. Ironically, though, this is because levels of actual sexual activity seem to drop in spring. The less sex men have, the more they save up their sperm and the greater their sperm count when they do have sex.

Professor Michael Smolensky, a chronobiologist from the University of Texas specialising in the relationship of biology to the rhythms of hours, days and months, says that statistics indicate that sexual activity in human beings is much greater in autumn,. “When we look at couples who have kept sex diaries and single males who have kept their own data, sexual activity is rather low in spring,” Smolensky says.

This fits with studies that have shown conclusively that levels of testosterone, the male sex hormone, are higher in late summer and early autumn than spring, so that’s when men have the greatest sex drive and when conception rates are high.

But sperm counts do peak in March, April and May. Smolensky says: “In sexually active males, sperm count is affected by two factors, environmental temperature and sexual activity. When men are sexually active, sperm count goes down; when they’re not sexually active, they’re not using it, so it goes up.” That could explain Smolensky’s findings that there are more unplanned babies conceived during spring than any other time of year. There are more sperm around, so despite less sex, one’s more likely to hit the mark.

Spring not only improves our mood and energy levels, it can protect our teeth and bones. On the first few sunny days of spring many people feel the urge to take off those winter togs and do a bit of prancing in the sunshine. This is in response to the fact that for several months our bodies have been starved of vitamin D, essential for healthy bones and teeth. And we make it only when our skins are exposed to sunlight. We’re craving a top-up.

post pregnancy weight loss not breastfeeding | Pregnancy Blog Week 31

post pregnancy weight loss not breastfeeding

You will be pleased to hear that I have not dyed my hair green or orange this week, nor have I cried over my wardrobe.  This week, I appear to have managed to keep it together! Hurrah!

Baby is apparently almost the size of a pineapple (does that include the leaves???) or a honeydew melon.  Either way, that seems pretty big to me, and I can really feel it too. Some days I feel like an elephant crashing around the house. I have also developed a skill for hitting my bump against most objects.  I manage to hit it on the kitchen sink at least five times a day, and even my daughter seems to have learnt to duck to dodge it! I also managed to nearly have a shelf of books cascade onto it whilst I was out shopping. Spacial awareness clearly isnt my thing.

Babys movements continue to be really big and prominent, but I cant quite figure out how he or she is lying.  At my last 28 week midwife appointment baby was lying transverse, so I cant wait for my next appointment at 34 weeks to find out if baby is head down.

I still seem to have quite alot of energy, though I certainly know about it if I have a late night (and by late night I mean 10.30pm...I know, rock n roll!!).  I had two late nights earlier this week and for the next few days I can only describe it as feeling really hungover, which I think is an obvious sign I may have overdone it a bit.  Feeling so tired also seems to set of Braxton Hicks contractions just for good measure.

In terms of getting things ready for baby, we are still decorating the nursery (I have very specific ideas, so its been a bit tricky to paint it how I wanted to), but as soon as its finished I will get a post up. I feel I really need to start thinking of getting my hospital bag together now, because being the complete control freak that I am, I need to have everything prepared way in advance.  Yesterday I blitzed the kitchen cupboards, which is of course a necessity for bringing a new baby home?!?!?

I do keep having really severe rib pain, which seems to get worse after I have eaten.  It really feels like there is no room in there and my ribs are squashing together.  It was so painful earlier in the week that I just had to lie in bed naked (so no clothes were constricting me) on my side with my arm waving in the air.  I know, what an image!!!

Hopefully next week I will report that I have at least made a start on my hospital bag. Oh, and baby is still nameless.  Which reminds me I have to pester my husband about that tonight!!!

Thanks for reading,

post baby weight loss journey | LIGHT AND FERTILITY

post baby weight loss journey

Pregnancy Over 40, The Light/Dark Connection

I frequently write about the importance of sleep and paying attention to the balance between light and dark on your bodys cycle.
This article does a good job of explaining the importance of light during the day and the earths natural rhythms. Read more:

When you are in sync with the earths natural rhythms and cycles you can boost your fertility. If you work against natures rhythms as many of us do, then you may be harming your delicate fertility balance.

Your biological clock is intimately linked to your reproductive system by utilizing the same hormones that trigger ovulation and sperm maturation. Therefore both women and men are affected by respecting or ignoring their natural rhythms.

See Also: Inositol and Egg Quality(www.getpregnantover40.com)

Importance of Bright Light

Getting adequate sunlight or other full spectrum light during the day is key to optimum fertility for many reasons. Vitamin D is created in our bodies when we are exposed to sunlight and Vitamin D deficiencies have been linked to infertility.

Adequate sunlight also helps regulate circadian rhythms which allow you to sleep better at night. Regular exposure to the sun also helps you maintain a strong immune system which is necessary to maintain a healthy pregnancy. Women who get more sunlight also have consistent and stronger menstrual cycles.

Finally, bright light prevents your body from overproducing melatonin which suppresses fertility. This might explain why it is easier for women to conceive in southern regions and during the summer months.

baby weight loss 5 months | Falling out of love with social media

baby weight loss 5 months

I have been very quiet on my social media pages just recently (audible gasp), and, if Im honest, Ive just really fallen a little bit out of love with it all.  As a blogger, you are meant to have your finger on all of your social media pulses, but my enthusiasm to do this has been pretty dead of late.

I actually havent even looked at my Instagram for a week now, and Twitter Ive glanced at once.  But I can honestly say, I havent really missed looking them.  Before, without really knowing I was doing it I would be checking my news feeds and before I knew it, I would be looking at some random persons outfit of the day.

Twitter really annoyed me recently, and whilst I follow some lovely people, I was getting really fed up of people following me only for me to follow them back back and then they would un-follow me.  It really feels like to some people its just a process to try and get as many followers as possible rather than actually wanting to engage and interact with others.

And then Im fretting about what Im actually tweeting.  Does anyone actually want to know that Im on my third (ok, fourth) biscuit? (Ok, ok, fifth).

And its the same on Instagram.  Looking at other peoples beautiful snaps is lovely, but then as Im sat in my pjs with toothpaste round my mouth and my hair resembling that of a birds nest, I dont always want to be reminded of other peoples luscious locks and adventures in a fairytale forest whilst they ride upon pink unicorns.  Or something like that.

I hope I dont sound bitter.  Hmmm, maybe I do and well blame it on the pregnancy hormones.  But sometimes, its nice to take a step back and disconnect from that social world.

I realise I wont be doing myself any favours with gaining new followers with this post! This really isnt an advert to follow me on my social media!! But, its the truth and this week, its how I feel.

Of course, I will be back on said social media accounts, and of course I will always love a little look at what other people are doing / up to.  But its nice to remember that life is happening right now and we dont need to tweet or instagram it to enjoy it. Sometimes its great to just be in that very moment and not tell a single other person about that beautiful sunrise you saw or delicious cake you just ate, because, well, its your secret. Just seeing it with your own eyes and experiencing is sometimes just enough.

early pregnancy losing weight no morning sickness | Rimmel WonderFull Mascara Review

early pregnancy losing weight no morning sickness

Whenever I need a new mascara, I always feel really overwhelmed by how much choice there actually is.  All mascaras pretty much promise to give you the lashes you have been dreaming of.  They will volumize, thicken, lengthen, sculpt, even do your ironing (well maybe not, but you get my point).  I can spend a considerable amount of time umming and ahhing over a new mascara purchase.  My go to high end mascara has to be YSLs shocking mascara which is just amazing.  But when my purse wont stretch that far and I need a drug-store version, I always seem to find myself in front of Rimmels counter.  But again, they have such a choice of mascaras that I always feel its a bit of a random decision with whichever mascara I come home with.

Recently I picked up Rimmels WonderFull mascara with added argan oil. First of all, the promises.  With no mention of doing my ironing, it does state it will leave lashes feeling conditioned and soft, with no clumps, but lots of volume. So does it?

I have to say this is a really lovely mascara.  It applies really easily, has a large brush which is perfect for adding volume, and it actually feels like it glides onto your lashes.  And the result?  Lengthened and volumized lashes.

Now Im no fool, it could totally be the placebo effect here, that because Im thinking that there is argan oil in the product, Im convincing myself that my lashes are looking smoother.  But I really think they are.  The consistency of this mascara is really smooth and it does feel almost conditioning. You can build up the mascara for a more dramatic effect and it really stays put once you have applied it.  No panda eyes here. I also found that the mascara was easily removable and I didnt need to rub at my eyes to get it off.

Im really happy with the results and all for £7.99? Bargain.

This may not be a ground breaking mascara.  It basically makes your lashes look lovely and Id highly recommend giving it a go if you find yourself becoming hypnotised by the sheer choice of mascaras out there. Oh, and if I do find that mascara that does your ironing, I will be sure to post it here first!!

I hope all of my UK readers are having a lovely bank holiday,

See you on Wednesday,

signs of pregnancy weight loss | An afternoon Strawberry Picking

signs of pregnancy weight loss

Last Sunday as the sun shone, we donned our straw hats and headed to Scaddows Farm in Ticknall, Derbyshire for a spot of strawberry picking. I had never been strawberry picking before, but I had heard rumours that this year was a good year for strawberries, and never one to miss out, we had to go and see for ourselves.

We arrived at Scaddows Farm to a huge field full of strawberry plants and eager pickers. We collected a punnet box from a van at the top of the field, and then that was it, we were set loose in this enormous strawberry filled field to collect strawberries to our hearts content!

Even though there were lots of people there, as the field was so so big and there were strawberries as far as the eye could see, there was lots of good spots and space to start picking.  My husband had a good technique of rummaging in the middle of the plants to find the big ones, so me and my daughter left him to it and chased each other up and down trying to find who could pick the biggest strawberry. My daughter may or may not have eaten more than she was giving me (sorry Scaddows).

After we had filled our box, we headed back to the van where they weighed our strawberry treasure.  I think for the punnet it cost us just under £2, which is a complete bargain, alot cheaper than the shops and much more fun.

There was a little farm shop too at the top of the farm selling food, drinks and delicious cakes, but I will have to return to try this out. Strawberry picking is something that is so simple, but was such a lovely family afternoon out.  I highly recommend it, and dont strawberries just taste nicer when you have picked them yourself?

baby weight loss during weaning | EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUE FOR FERTILITY TAPPING

baby weight loss during weaning

I heard about EFT many years ago when I was searching and researching natural ways to prepare my body for pregnancy.  EFT stands for "Emotional Freedom Technique" and it can be thought of as emotional acupuncture or acupressure.  It is a system of  clearing out emotional blockages that may be preventing you from getting pregnant (it can be used for a number of disorders, not just infertility).
It combines the physical benefits of acupunture with the benefits of cognitive therapy.  Many women who delay childbearing do so for reasons relating to their childhood and their upbringing.  For
picture: renegadehealth.com
example, I had a negative impression of marriage and children for many years and, when I was younger, I would tell people I didnt want children.  It wasnt until I was in my upper 30s that I got married and even thought about getting pregnant.  Its no wonder my body wasnt responding the way it should to getting pregnant or staying pregnant.  I did practice EFT, and Im sure it helped me get pregnant naturally, even at the age of 44.

weight loss after pregnancy over 41 | An app for pregnancy Preggie Review

weight loss after pregnancy over 41

Theres nothing more helpful than a good old app when you are pregnant to give you the all important information on how baby is progressing, what size of fruit or vegetable he or she is and where you can ask, without looking like a total idiot, if you really can eat that cheesecake (though cheesecake-gate is another blog post entirely which you can catch up on here).  I was asked to take a look at a new app called Preggie, which lets you do all of the above and a little bit more.

Preggie is a free and simple to use app. You download it to your preferred device, then fill in a few details, such as your name, when is baby due and you set up a profile of yourself.

After youve filled in your information, you immediately get a feed from other pregnant ladies across the country.  Other users upload pictures, questions, status updates and how their pregnancy is progressing.  You can then interact by liking posts, adding your thoughts to threads, uploading your own thoughts and pictures, sending direct messages and following specific users.

What immediately struck me is the supportive nature of the ladies on the app and the ability to access the app to chat or vent or share a problem, whatever the time of day or night, and be met with supportive comments.

By including the are where you live, Preggie also lets you connect with women in your local area. Pregnancy can be quite overwhelming and daunting, and I think to know that others feel the same way as you do is very reassuring. I think the location feature of this app is perfect for any pregnant mums who want to find other pregnant mums in their area, want to make new friends, know what groups might be nearby, or even want to compare bump pictures (Im totally guilty of sneakily comparing bump sizes!!!).

As Preggie is just for pregnant mums to be, you know you arent spamming your Facebook timeline or asking people questions who really arent interested about your pregnancy. Everyone is in the same boat, and thats what is so special about this app.  You also receive updates about your pregnancy, and my baby is the size of a corn today if you are interested!

With any type of social media, you need to be aware of the information you share and apply common sense.  Preggie is strongly monitored which results in a very supportive community for mums-to-be during their pregnancy.

To try this lovely free app, click on this link to download: Preggie.

Thanks for reading,

Preggie asked me to try their app and the above downloadable link is an affiliate link. All opinions are entirely my own and I think Preggie is a lovely little app that is definitely worth taking a look at.

baby jaundice weight lose | NATURAL PREGNANCY OVER 50 YES 50!

baby jaundice weight lose

I frequently write about women and couples who get pregnant over 40.  Its certainly not that uncommon contrary to the popular media.  But what about pregnancy over 50?  Can it happen naturally.  I have a number of cases of pregnancy over 50 on a new page on my website.  Most of these cases were surprise pregnancies and their spouse was also over the age of 50.  Read more here:

weight loss during pregnancy with no morning sickness | Molar pregnancy

weight loss during pregnancy with no morning sickness

I went in for my D&C follow-up appointment this past week only to find out that this last pregnancy (that ended in a miscarriage) was a molar pregnancy. What is a molar pregnancy, you ask? I had the same question. My OBGyn gave me information from the Mayo Clinic (view it here, or Google "Molar Pregnancy Mayo Clinic"). Im going to use that source as well as What to Expect When You are Expecting by Heidi Murkoff, Arlene Eisenberg, and Sandee Hathaway (I have the third edition), the two sources I have used looking up molar pregnancy. My doctor said that sometimes Googling things leads to finding out really scary information and Ive decided that I dont need more stress (he also told me to call him if someone tells me something upsetting that I want to ask about). Im going to do my best explaining a molar pregnancy with those two sources.

There are two types of molar pregnancies: a complete molar pregnancy and a partial molar pregnancy. I had a partial molar pregnancy. What to Expect defines a complete molar pregnancy as "an abnormal mass, instead of a normal embryo, [that] forms inside the uterus after fertilization. The trophoblast-- the layer of cells that line the gestational sac-- converts into a clump of clear tapioca-like vesicles instead of the beginnings of a placenta" (pg 513). The Mayo Clinic says, "in a partial molar pregnancy, theres an abnormal embryo and possibly some normal placental tissue. The embryo begins to develop but is malformed and cant survive." What to Expect goes further and says, "if the fetus survives, it may be growth-restricted and have a variety of congenital abnormalities..." (pg 515).

What causes a molar pregnancy? To quote the Mayo Clinic:
A molar pregnancy is caused by an abnormally fertilized egg. Human cells normally contain 23 chromosomes. One chromosome in each pair comes from the father, the other from the mother. In a complete molar pregnancy, all the fertilized eggs chromosomes come from the father... In a partial molar pregnancy, the mothers chromosomes remain but the father provides two sets of chromosomes. As a result, the embryo has 69 chromosomes, instead of 46. This can happen when the fathers chromosomes are duplicated or if two sperm fertilize a single egg.
A complete molar pregnancy "can be detected as early as eight or nine weeks" on an ultrasound (Mayo Clinic). The ultrasound may show: "no embryo or fetus, no amniotic fluid, a thick cystic placenta nearly filling the uterus, ovarian cysts" (Mayo Clinic). "As the pregnancy progresses, 1 in 5 women may pass a few of these tiny vesicles... The uterus is larger than expected and feels doughy rather than firm; no fetal heartbeat can be detected. Preeclampsia... or in some cases loss of weight and other indications of increased thyroid activity, may also be seen... The ovaries may also be enlarged because of the accompanying high levels of hCG" (What to Expect, pg 513).

In a partial molar pregnancy, "an ultrasound may show: a growth-restricted fetus, low amniotic fluid, a thick cystic placenta" (Mayo Clinic). What to Expect says the signs and symptoms "are similar to those of an incomplete or missed abortion. There is usually irregular... bleeding, no fetal heartbeat, and a uterus that is either small or normal for the length of the pregnancy. Only a small percentage of women with partial molar pregnancies have an enlarged uterus, as is common in a complete molar pregnancy" (pg 515).

Both sources list some physical signs. The Mayo Clinic listed: "dark brown to bright red...bleeding during the first trimester, severe nausea and vomiting, ...passage of grape-like cysts, rarely pelvic pressure or pain." What to Expect said, "The first sign of a molar pregnancy is usually an intermittent, though sometimes continuous, brownish discharge. Frequently normal morning sickness of pregnancy becomes abnormally severe" (pg 513).

This was my fourth pregnancy; I had no spotting and normal morning sickness. I felt nauseous and tired and did not suspect that something was wrong until our first ultrasound (read my blog post "Miscarriage"). We were told we could have our dates wrong or that the pregnancy was not progressing. With regular ultrasounds and blood work, it become apparent that I was miscarrying. The diagnosis of a partial molar pregnancy was a huge surprise.

Who is at a higher risk for a molar pregnancy? According to What to Expect, molar pregnancies occur "roughly 1 in 2,000 pregnancies in the United States... more often in women over forty-five than in younger mothers" (pg 513). The Mayo Clinic says, "molar pregnancy is uncommon, occurring in about 1 in every 1,000 pregnancies." The Mayo Clinic lists the at-risk groups:
  • "Maternal age. A molar pregnancy is more likely for a woman older than age 35 or younger than age 20.
  • "Previous molar pregnancy. If youve had one molar pregnancy, youre more likely to have another. A repeat molar pregnancy happens, on average, in 1 to 2 out of every 100 women.
  • "Some ethnic groups. Women of Southeast Asian descent appear to have a higher risk of molar pregnancy."
How do you treat a molar pregnancy? "A molar pregnancy cant continue as a normal viable pregnancy. To prevent complications, the molar tissue must be removed" (Mayo Clinic). My OBGyn explained to me that complete molar pregnancies are visible on an ultrasound, while partial molar pregnancies often appear to be regular miscarriages, as mine did. Partial molar pregnancies are frequently discovered after a D&C when the tissue removed is examined by a doctor.

I did find something interesting in What to Expect regarding partial molar pregnancies on page 515, though I am unclear as to what circumstances would lead you to discover this was happening:
If a normal fetus is born, it usually turns out that it was part of a multiple pregnancy, with the partial mole belonging to a twin that had deteriorated... If the fetus is living and appears on ultrasound to be in good condition, the pregnancy will probably be allowed to continue.
Now that you understand what a molar pregnancy is, what are the complications involved with having a molar pregnancy? "A molar pregnancy can have serious complications-- including a rare form of cancer-- and requires early treatment" (Mayo Clinic). Im going to copy the Mayo Clinics Complications section because it is very informative:
After a molar pregnancy has been removed, molar tissue may remain and continue to grow. This is called persistent gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD). It occurs in about 20% of women after a molar pregnancy-- usually after a complete mole rather than a partial mole.
One sign of persistent GTD is an elevated level of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG)-- a pregnancy hormone-- in your blood even after the molar pregnancy has been removed. In some cases, an invasive mole penetrates deep into the middle layer of the uterine wall, which causes...bleeding. Persistent GTD can nearly always be successfully treated, most often with chemotherapy. Another treatment option is removal of the uterus (hysterectomy).
What to Expect says on pg 513:
Follow-up is important, since about 10-15% of molar pregnancies dont stop growing immediately. If blood hCG levels fail to return to normal, another D&C is performed. In the rare instances that hCG levels remain elevated after a second procedure, the physician will check for a new pregnancy or for the spread of molar tissue to the [lady parts] or lungs, which may be treated with chemotherapy. Very rarely, a molar pregnancy becomes malignant... so close medical follow-up is especially important, since this condition is very curable with early diagnosis and treatment.
How do they monitor your HCG levels? As stated, HCG is the pregnancy hormone. A negative result is a negative pregnancy test, meaning there were no HCG levels in your blood. My OBGyn wants me to come in for weekly blood tests until I have three negative tests in a row. Once that happens, he wants me to come in for monthly blood tests, again looking for negative results. If my HCG levels stay the same or go up, all of the molar matter has not been removed and we will have to look at our treatment options.

When can I get pregnant again? "Because pregnancy makes it difficult to monitor HCG levels," you are not recommended to get pregnant right away (Mayo Clinic). One of the first things my OBGyn did was write me a prescription for birth control. What to Expect says, "a new pregnancy is not recommended until hCG levels have been the same for one year" (pg 515). The Mayo Clinic says your doctor "may recommend waiting six months to one year before trying to become pregnant." My OBGyn recommended six months.

Will this affect my ability to get pregnant? According to the Mayo Clinic and What to Expect, it shouldnt. What to Expect states, "most women can have healthy babies after having a partial molar pregnancy, but since the risk of repeat exists, early ultrasound examination is important in future pregnancies to rule out that possibility" (pg 515). Mayo Clinic says, "if youve had a molar pregnancy, talk to your health care provider before conceiving again... During any subsequent pregnancies, your health care provider may do early ultrasounds to monitor your condition and offer reassurance of normal development." My OBGyn spent much time reassuring me that this should not affect our future chances of a successful pregnancy; Im very optimistic though nervous about the chance of a repeat molar pregnancy.

The rare form of cancer is called choriocarcinoma, discussed in What to Expect. "Choriocarcinoma is an extremely rare cancer related directly to pregnancy. About half the cases develop when there is a molar pregnancy..." (pg 515). It is treated with chemotherapy. "With early diagnosis and treatment, survival is the norm and fertility is unaffected, though it is deferred for two years after treatment is complete and there is no evidence of residual disease" (pg 515). My OBGyn said that in his 18 years as a practicing OBGyn he has had 1-2 molar pregnancies a year and none have turned cancerous.

The Mayo Clinic also includes a section called Coping and Support:
Losing a pregnancy is devastating. Give yourself time to grieve. Talk about your feelings and allow yourself to experience them fully. Turn to your partner, family and friends for support. If youre having trouble handling your emotions, consult your health care provider or a counselor.
Miscarriages are heartbreaking. This is our second miscarriage and it doesnt get easier. Sometimes it is very hard to hear people say, "You can try again soon." It makes me feel like Im taking the miscarriage too hard and that I shouldnt view it as losing a child. I feel like Ive lost a child that I will never get to hold. It has taken me nearly a week to digest this latest development, the molar pregnancy. I feel so frustrated that we have to wait so long before we can start trying again. Im praying hard about it because I feel so impotent. Ive had two miscarriages and one of them was a molar pregnancy. Will I have another molar pregnancy? How long will we have to wait? I dont want to rush things and risk the serious complications of a molar pregnancy, but I want to start trying as soon as possible.

Ay me! sad hours seem long.

baby losing weight newborn | Pregnancy Blog Week 30

baby losing weight newborn

For some reason, entering week 30 has really made me think that I havent got long to go at all.  10 weeks really doesnt sound like a very long time to me, and I cant quite believe that 30 weeks of this pregnancy have gone by already!

I have felt quite well this last week, and apart from a slight hiccup on Friday night, there have been no Braxton Hicks or false labour moments! Ok, ok, so you want to hear about the hiccup on Friday night.

Basically, I have been getting really fed up of my hair.  Its so long now and takes so long to dry that I have debated whether to just cut it all off and be done with it. Usually when I start thinking these thoughts, I change the colour a little and then I like my hair for a few more months.

So, I saw some hair dye in Boots that gave you a bronde type of colour (not quite blonde but not quite brown).  You apply the dye with a little brush rather than applying it to your whole head and I thought this sounded fantastic as it meant the colour wasnt coming into direct contact with my scalp, and therefore would be a better alternative during pregnancy. All I can say is that home alone with my daughter on Friday night, a few hours later and my hair had turned a really lovely streaky shade of orange!!!

At 7pm, I rushed to Boots with a tired toddler in tow, and orange hair in a bun (I actually hid from someone I knew because I thought it looked that bad!!!!). I was a bit dubious of the bottles claiming to completely strip my hair of the colour, so I opted for another hair colour to mask my orange barnet.

Now, I picked up dark blonde, and whilst my hair colour is no longer orange, its also darker than I wanted (I had originally wanted to go lighter).  I spent the next few hours sitting staring at my hair and then, in a bid to almost cause myself more pain, I started Googling if you should dye your hair whilst pregnant (bearing in mind I had already dyed it).

I have to say, no one has actually noticed my hair colour change.  I had to tell my husband what I had done before he realised and my friends are none the wiser (unless everyone is just being very kind).  I wouldnt mind so much, but Ive dyed my hair a funny shade of orange at least three times now.  I thought you were meant to get wiser as you got older??????

But enough about my hair disaster which I am completely blaming on pregnancy hormones (though I think we all know thats no excuse) back to baby news.

We have finally bought a new pram, a new bed for our daughter (so her bed can convert back into the cot), and a new cot mattress.  As I type this, I am waiting for the deliveries to arrive, but I have a sneaky suspicion that I am going to have to wait in all day, and then they will come at 5pm or something.  Grrrrrr.

Baby is also moving lots this afternoon.  And we also dont have a name. I have to have a name picked out ready, because there is no way I can just come up with one on the spot after labour.  Every night me and my husband debate a lengthy list of boys and girls names.  But its ok, we have another ten weeks to decide!!! Eeeek!

Thanks for reading and have a lovely weekend,

baby weight loss nhs | Pregnancy Blog Week 33

baby weight loss nhs

Hello week 33 and goodbye to being able to see my toes, I could have hobbit feet down there for all I know!  I feel like my bump has really grown this week.  Simple tasks such as getting my socks on cause quite a commotion and I think my husband thinks he is watching a comedy show as I huff and puff getting dressed. Its all glamour here.

I also might as well tell you that I am out of breath.  Alot. In fact, if you want to know my precise location just listen closely. I think my mum thought she had a nuisance caller ring her earlier this week because I was breathing so heavily down the line. I am definitely in the last trimester now!

The nursery is almost complete! Almost! The painting is all done now and we just  need to assemble the cot and then find the Moses basket which I am sure I stored safely away in the loft.

Why do people put all the old baby things in the loft when in fact that is the worst place to put them? No pregnant lady in their right mind would ascend our loft stairs and fumble about in the dark. Every home should have a baby bunker where you store things and then when you are pregnant again you can waddle in and out to your hearts content. Instead, Im waiting for my husband to give me the nod and Ill hold the ladder for him whilst shouting at him I dont want the Christmas decoration box.  Not yet anyway.

I dont think Im actually waddling...yet.  Im pretty sure my walk is normal. Though others might say different.

Im looking forward to my 34 week midwife appointment next week, it feels like it has been so long since I saw her.

My rib-pain hasnt been too bad this week, and my heartburn has been OK too.  Could this be a sign that baby has moved lower down? We shall see!

My hospital bag is still not packed (theres a surprise)...but...I have bought a lovely overnight bag for myself that I will show you when its all actually packed.  I know I have my priorities all completely wrong here.  My husband rolled his eyes when I told him I wanted a nice overnight bag and offered me his old gym bag.  Erm, no thank you.

Ive had a person ask me if Im excited this week (groans...you can see why I hate that question here), and then someone has commented on how big I look (more groans).  So the inappropriate comments keep on coming.  I clearly soon shall be so big that I will be visible from space!

Thanks for reading and have a fab weekend whatever youre up to,

post pregnancy weight loss massage | Hello!

post pregnancy weight loss massage

Hello there! I am sorry I havent posted in a while.  Before LL came along, I had this idea in my head that I would still be blogging whilst she fed and Id be able to happily multi-task.  The reality is some days its a mission to brush my own teeth, let alone write a legible and coherent blog post!

But, here I am.  LL is 5 weeks old today and Im sat in the nursery feeding her.  Weve had a really bad night and I think I got a grand total of 2 hours sleep.  My husband is also away, so its been a tough week.  Not that Im feeling sorry for myself (well maybe I am just a little).  The kitchen is such a mess it looks like we have been burgled, and for reasons unbeknownst to me, I thought it would be a good idea to sort out a kitchen cupboard this morning.

I can only describe these first few weeks as some of the toughest times with sleep deprivation and trying to get into a rhythm of having two little ones to look after.  But, these first few weeks are also the most magical and special.  Its a strange mix.

I know these days will quickly pass, so when Im sat in bed shedding a little tear because I am so exhausted, I try to focus on the fact that one day I will want these days back.

One of the hardest things of being a mum of two is the guilt in trying to split my time between them both.  I feel guilty if one is crying while Im trying to sort the other out and at times I just worry if Im doing a good enough job.  I feel guilty if I am cleaning instead of playing, guilty if Im trying to Christmas shop instead of just being a mum.  But then I think all of this is part of being a mum.  I thought with my second I would worry less about what Im doing, but where I am confident in alot of things, that worry of if Im doing a good enough job is still there, especially when Im tired.  I think that just comes with being a mum and Ill never escape it.

I cant put into words my love for LL and I look at my two girls and wonder how I got to be so lucky to have this amazing little family.
LL has finished feeding now, so I will go and try and do something with the kitchen before feral cats make a home in there.

I have lots to share with you, from my birth story, to the things I wish Id packed in my labour bag and a little story of breastfeeding in front of 500 people!!!!

Thank you so much for reading and bearing with me.  I thought people may have forgotten about me and my little blog, but I was so happy this morning when I saw people were still reading and checking back. Thank you so much, it means so much to me to have you share my journey.

I hope you are having a good day, and I hope this post is legible and makes some sense.

Thank you for reading,

baby losing weight nursing | Why I dont want my daughter to hear the F word

baby losing weight nursing

As you may or not know, Im currently in the last trimester of my second pregnancy. A few weeks ago, I was stood in the front of the mirror. Normally, I am relatively happy with my body shape and the curves that pregnancy brings. But on this particular day, all I could see were my imperfections, and lots of them.  None of my clothes looked right, I thought my bum and hips looked enormous, and at least 100 times bigger than the previous day. Quite frankly I didnt like what I saw.  And it was then I said it.

I turned to my husband and said, Do you think I look really fat today?. My husband immediately shot a glance towards the corner of the room where our three year daughter was happily spinning around in her princess costume. I shut up straight away. I dont want my daughter hearing that word from me ever again.

For me, saying that word in front of my daughter meant that I was introducing her to this inherent and dangerous concept in our society. Lets face it, there isnt a day that goes by without the fat/thin/weight debate rearing its head.  The words fat and thin are banded about like they are commonplace.

I wonder how damaged the next generation will be.  Bombarded with cleverly airbrushed images, selfies galore and the impossible pressure to look like an image that is clearly unattainable

Where has normal gone in all of this? Our view of bodies is so skewed, that we look in disgust if we have cellulite, if our bums are a bit bigger or wobble, or at our changing and ageing body shapes.  Where is the wonder at how amazing our bodies are? That are legs walk us around every day? That we have a body that functions? That we are able to run after our children?

To me, its not about size or shape. Its recognising what is normal and thats we have lost. And its up to me to teach my daughter about a normal, healthy body.  Of loving your body, accepting every part of it, being grateful for every part of it.  Before she sees the sadness in the world of how we really have lost the plot with body image.

Thats why I will never stand in front of the mirror again and utter those stupid, stupid words.  By teaching my daughter, I guess I have to teach myself too. Life is too short and our bodies are way too precious.

weight loss journey after pregnancy | 47 YEAR OLD NATURAL CONCEPTION AND PREGNANCY

weight loss journey after pregnancy

Woman Conceives Naturally at 47

Heres another one!
Heres another story of a woman who got pregnant by surprise at the age of 47.  So all you "youngsters" in your early 40s, it certainly happens!  Read more:

From the article:

Becoming pregnant at age 47 wasnt a worry for Robin Brussel. "I enjoyed every minute of being pregnant," she said.
Still, it was a surprise. "I thought I was going through pre-menopause," she said. "It just happened."
Brussel, now 48, gave birth in December to a 6-pound, 10-ounce boy named Noah she carried for 39 weeks. He was a cesarean birth, as were her four older children, ages 18 to 28. Noah was the first child born to her and her husband, Mark Brussel, 56. Theyve been married nearly four years.

pregnancy weight loss last month | LAUGHTER SHOWN TO HELP WOMEN GET PREGNANT

pregnancy weight loss last month

Trying To Get Pregnant Over 40?  Start Laughing!

The old saying "laughter is the best medicine" may have something to it.
I mention in my book that laughter has many healing benefits and when I was trying to conceive, I would make a point of watching the funny videos show. You cant help but laugh, even if you dont feel like it (thats when you need it the most).
This article talks about an IVF clinic who had a clown visit patients after their procedures had higher success rates. It may be worth a try! Read more:

This experimental prospective quasi-randomized study examining the impact of a medical clowning encounter after embryo transfer (ET) after in vitro fertilization (IVF) found that the pregnancy rate in the intervention group was 36.4%, compared with 20.2% in the control group (adjusted odds ratio, 2.67; 95% confidence interval, 1.36–5.24). Medical clowning as an adjunct to IVF-ET may have a beneficial effect on pregnancy rates and deserves further investigation.sciencedirect.com

pregnancy weight loss pills | Last Stop San Diego

pregnancy weight loss pills

The final stop on our American road trip was San Diego, which was to be our home for our last four nights.  We stayed in La Jolla which is a gorgeous part of San Diego and Id highly recommend staying in the area. Whilst close to all that San Diego has to offer, La Jolla was beautiful in itself and it was lovely to just stroll around.  We stayed at the Empress Hotel and I would highly recommend it.  We had a family room which was huge and equipped with a mini kitchen, dining room and master bedroom.  My daughter and I also loved the freshly baked cookies that appeared every afternoon!

Just a five minute stroll from our hotel and we were by the sea.  We were also really near the Childrens pool.  This beach has a wall built out to the sea to allow calmer waters for children. However, the calmer waters have resulted in the beach being populated by seals and their pups.  I think there is an ongoing debate as to if the seals should remain on the beach or if the beach should return to being a child friendly one.

We were quite happy to just admire these beautiful creatures, if they were a little on the smelly side.

Our favourite beach by far, was Shores beach. It was clean and had good facilities. It also had a great childrens play area too, so when my daughter got fed up of chasing the waves after a mere 5 hours, we then walked to the play area. Our favourite times were spent just playing in the sea and building sand castles.

There was so much to see and do in San Diego and I would love to return to see more of this amazing city. We visited an area known as The Old Town Market, which was this fantastic Mexican outdoor market with shops, restaurants and lots of local history and interesting buildings.

We also visited the Little Italy market, which runs every Saturday from 8am until 2pm, selling everything from beautiful art prints to flowers and fresh fruit. My advice is to go hungry because the food looked absolutely delicious.

Balboa Park was also stunning and worth a visit, though we only saw a tiny part of it.

Pacific Beach and Mission beach had lots to do too, from the gorgeous beaches themselves to mini golf (a must on holidays), shopping and so so many restaurants!  I have never eaten so much delicious fresh fish and seafood as I did in San Diego!

On our last day we went to the pier at Pacific beach and went to Crystal Pier bait and tackle, where you can rent everything you need to try and catch a fish.  My husband has never fished in his life, so between the three of us I imagined us pulling up a tyre or surfer. My daughter found it very exciting, even if she did nearly attach us to the hook on more than one occasion!!

But would you believe we caught a fish!!! An actual fish!!! It was absolutely huge...(please note, my husband has very, very large hands which gives the perception of the fish being smaller than it actually was!!!!!). You have to do this if you visit the area and the owners of the bait shop were really lovely and friendly. (I can confirm that no fish were harmed during our fishing expedition, and after being dropped on the board walk, the fish was returned safely to the water!).

It was the perfect day to end our perfect trip.

I felt like we had seen so many amazing things and it was lovely to spend so much time together, just the three of us.
