Fertility Treatments Over 40 - Mishaps

I recall back when I was going through fertility treatments before I embarked on my all natural journey to pregnancy.
 We tried medications, inseminations, and IVF. I never really understood what I was getting myself into until after it was over. One of the scariest moments was when we tried intrauterine inseminations to increase chances of conception by by-passing a less than friendly vaginal/cervical environment.

I went in for my insemination after my husband gave his "donation". After signing into the doctors office, I waited and waited. The receptionist kept giving me these weird looks and after I waited an hour and a half, the doctor himself called me into his office. He sheepishly told me there was a "mix up" in the lab and they had to cancel my insemination. The nurse jokingly says, "We wouldnt want a baby that doesnt look anything like you, now would we?" I sat there somewhat stunned, thinking "EXCUSE ME??? You mean to tell me my husbands sperm is floating around in the wrong pipette? And even worse, some other guys sperm was in my pipette?!" Well, in their defense, at least the lab technician admitted to the error. I really could have had someone elses baby.

In retrospect, all of this really does make me think about all of the things that can happen when you fool with mother nature. I know that some couples have no choice but to undergo fertility treatments, but it is a little worrisome that you really never know whats going on in the lab. Everything is microscopic, if something gets mislabeled.....its all over (or you could have a major dilemma the rest of your life). The same holds true for couples undergoing IVF or donor cycles. Check out the clinic ahead of time. Ask what safeguards their lab has in place. Better yet, try the natural route. Even though it doesnt have a 100% success rate, it has 100% accuracy.

Most people who are trying to conceive probably know all about FSH (FSH stands for "Follicle Stimulating Hormone").

What were usually told is that the higher the FSH, the lower the chances you will conceive (under 10 is usually considered workable - but read on...)


Im frequenty asked what my FSH was when I conceived my daughter. My answer is "I dont know" because I had discontinued fertility treatments and I never had it tested after my initial "work-up" when I was 38. Im glad I didnt have it tested again...it probably would have served no purpose but to discourage me. Im sure my FSH had gone up - but maybe thats why I got pregnant!

I have no idea if it helped prevent an early miscarriage, but it did ease my mind somewhat.

Ill warn you right up front, the following article is a little scary, and it made me a little angry to read it. Its about a 45 year old woman who became unexpectedly pregnant (after she was told that a uterine deformity would render her infertile) and since doctors never considered the possibility of pregnancy, they put her through a multitude of tests exposing her to drugs, radiation and the list goes on.
The moral of the story is, 45 year olds do get pregnant - even against the odds. Somehow, the medical community needs to realize that and take precautions just like they would with any other woman! Just because youre in your forties doesnt mean that you are not of "child bearing age". Read more:

On Wednesday 4th November at 3.10am we welcomed a beautiful baby girl to the Bee family. 9 months of waiting, weeks of debating if I was in labour, one false start, and here she is. Born two days early. Our perfect baby girl. 

I often wondered how it would feel to love another little baby. I love my three year old daughter with every cell in my body. My love is indescribable for her. I often would stare at my pregnant belly and wonder if that love could be repeated again. 

Someone once told me that your love just grows, and as cheesy as it sounds your heart just grows that bit more to accommodate more love. Ok, thats really cheesy, but you know what? Its really true. As I held this tiny baby in my arms, I fell in love all over again. I knew Id do anything for her. My beautiful baby girl. 

LL is now 9 days old and Im sat in bed feeding her typing this on my phone. I got 2 hours sleep last night and Im not quite sure how my eyes are still open. Id completely forgot (or blocked out) how tiring the early weeks are. But being baby no.2 I do feel different. I think Im a little bit more relaxed. At 4am when I wanted to wail at my sheer exhaustion I knew in my head this wont last forever. When Im old and wrinkly I know I will think about these days, that feeling at 4am that you and baby are the only ones awake in the whole world, that baby smell, the touch of soft skin. This is it. 

I wont go into my labour story now but it went amazingly and as hard as it was it was surreal and so special. 

My daughter, who I shall now have to refer to as BB, adores her baby sister and has been amazing too. Shes played up a few times for us, like refusing to get dressed or hiding under the table, but I think thats to be expected. Everything has changed. 

I still cant quite believe this little person was in my belly just over a week ago. It truly is a miracle. And whilst this may read like Im seeing everything through rose-tinted glasses, maybe thats because I am. All through my pregnancy I marvelled at the miracle of being blessed with another baby. And now shes here.

2. General medical evaluation of both spouses for infertility.
3. Post-coital test to assess sperm count and viability. These tests are undertaken after normal intercourse.
4. Appropriate evaluation and treatment of male factor deficiency. Seminal fluid samples can be obtained from a non-lubricated, perforated condom after normal intercourse.
5. Assessment of uterine and tubal structural competence by imaging techniques (e.g., ultrasound, hysterosalpingogram, etc.).

I received an e-mail from a woman I met when I ran the womens support group for my local infertility organization. She conceived naturally while on a break from her fertility treatments and had her baby on her 44th birthday.
 She was talking about how other women who conceive easily have no clue what infertility is like. Its still a bit of a sore spot with most of us even after we succeed in having a baby.  Other people just seem to take for granted what a miracle it is to have a child.

It reminds me of a time when I was talking with some other mothers at our local librarys "storytime". One woman was trying to conceive her second child and was getting a bit impatient because two months had gone by and she still wasnt pregnant.   It almost made me want to laugh because after everything I had gone through, two months was a blink of an eye.  Without thinking, I blurted out "try six years". I immediately knew I shouldnt have said that. She and a few others turned and looked at me dumbfounded like I was some kind of freak. Since then Im much more selective who I share my information with.

The moral of the story is that going through infertility teaches you how to appreciate even the smallest of blessings. Thats a blessing in itself. When you appreciate what you have or what your given, life is so much more rewarding.

Pregnancy Over 40, Trying To Conceive Over 40, Try Screaming!

One of the turning points in my journey to get pregnant was when I completely boiled over with frustration.
I was on the edge of completely giving up and actually did give up and came to the (supposed) realization that I was never going to have a baby. One day, I was home alone and I started screaming at the top of my lungs. I cursed the world, I cursed the universe and I screamed at God and all my guardian angels for abandoning me when I needed them most. To this day, I wonder how it was that my neighbors didnt hear me! The day after this tantrum, my throat was sore and I was tired and emotionally spent.

 But the funny thing is, I felt better. I felt like I got it all out and I felt like I was heard (by who I dont know!) As I discuss in my book, it was shortly after that I found out I was pregnant with my daughter. I dont think that was just a coincidence. Screaming really can help and it feels so good to just let it all out. Just make sure you have a safe place where you wont scare your neighbors!!

Im constantly finding stories of women who conceive naturally at older ages.  Many women over 40 and over 45 think theyre too old to get pregnant and they forget about their birth control.  Here is a story of a women who had a surprise pregnancy at the age of 48!  Imagine her surprise not only because of her age, but because she already has a 28 year old child (and her husband who is 56 has a 36 year old).
Well, it just goes to show you that babies come when theyre good and ready.

Oh wow, what a surprise today!  I previously ran an infertility support group for my local infertility organization. That was years ago and most of the women in the group have long since had their children and moved on to different phases of their life. 

Well the strangest thing happened today as it was the first day of school.  I was at the parent orientation and saw a woman who looked familiar, but couldnt place her.  As I looked at her, it finally dawned on me where I had seen her before.  She was in my infertility support group.  At the time (years ago) we were two of the oldest people in the group.  We were both in our 40s.

She became pregnant before me (she succeeding in becoming pregnant with some minor fertility treatments) and had her baby six months before my daughter was born.  I had not seen her in years, but her name came to me when I finally realized she was a fellow support group attendee.  I had to remind her how we knew each other and I whispered in her ear "fertility support group" to maintain confidentiality (even after all these years, I dont discuss these things openly).

As it turns out, her son and my daughter will be attending the same school. It really is a small world and when I saw her, a flood of memories came back (and not all good ones!)  It reminded me how far we all have come from those painful days of wanting a baby and some dark moments of thinking it will never happen.  But look at us now....weve both accomplished our goals and those trying to conceive days are a distant memory....even though we were well into our 40s when we finally got pregnant, we still had and have a whole life ahead of us. 

My message to you if you are in the throes of infertility and or recurrent miscarriage, is that the vast majority of women succeed in having a child.  Past failure does not predict future results.  You can do this too!  Babies come on their own schedule and now that I have my daughter, I can see that the timing was perfect.  There was no way for me to know that at the time I was stuck in infertility quicksand, but I do see it now.  You are no different.  You will accomplish your goal.
