pregnancy weight loss secrets | Is this a baby group or the X Factor

pregnancy weight loss secrets

Ahh the world of parent and baby groups.  Before having a baby, I was aware this world existed, but I have to say, they only existed in my periphery.  But, after having my daughter, I was thrust into the madness of the baby group.  Dont get me wrong, I think parent and baby groups are fantastic and I have met some lovely parents at them.  I do think you have to pick which groups work for you though, because some quite frankly are plain weird.  And just so you know, the majority come with singing.

Now, I completely understand the benefits of singing to your little one. It promotes their speech, encourages interaction and really strengthens that mother and baby bond.  There is nothing that me and daughter like doing more than putting on Mary Poppins and proceeding to dance and sing around the dog. But, my friends, there is a slight problem with my beautiful singing voice, that being, I havent got a beautiful singing voice. I cant sing.  When my daughter winced and then had a full fit of giggles as I reach my crescendo in a Spoonful of Sugar, I knew right then I had a serious problem (I think the dog howling was a little harsh).

At some groups, I manage to mime. Ive become a bit of a pro actually.   To the point where I think I could give a good show on Top of the Pops if they gave me a backing track.  At some smaller groups I whisper like a mouse or a very quiet person (which I am not).  At some groups I completely forget and as I join in with the fifth round of Happy Birthday, (theres always about 6 birthdays per week), I frustratingly wonder why it has to go up so bloody high and I hope to God the mum sitting crossed legged next to me didnt hear my rendition (she probably did and wont sit next to me again).

But then, one fateful day at a baby group, my usual tactics failed me. The lady leading the session, who I shall now refer to as Simon Cowell, went around the circle and asked parents to choose what song the group should sing.  Now this is fine and dandy if you are sat to her right.  Oh yes, this is all bloody well and good if you are sat to her right.  Yes, lets sing, twinkle twinkle, wind the bobbin, baa baa black sheep, and the list goes on.  But, there isnt a infinite amount of nursery rhyme songs.  When the woman next to me suggested Little Miss Muffet, I knew we were scraping the barrel.  And then it was my turn. What song would you like to sing?, Simon asked.  All eyes were on me.  What I would like to have said is, Youre bloody running the group, you pick the next song. But I didnt. Even my little daughter turned to watch what song her mummy would sing with baited breath.

I wracked my brains.  Ah-ha! Take this Simon I thought!! How about Down in the Jungle I said.  Everyone just continued to look at me.  I had made a fundamental error.  No-one knew the bloody song.  I had got my groups muddled up and it was another group that we sang this song at. And what did Cowell do? Did she say, Oh never mind, lets sing Twinkle Twinkle again?.  No.  No, she did not.  Oooh lets hear it, she said. I cleared my throat and what happened next was the most painful minute and a half of my life and probably everyone elses.  Im sure a few stray cats even wandered into the hall to join in at what they thought was the grand master cat screeching out a cat call.  I have never been so embarrassed or so red in my life.  Why didnt I just pick the Neighbours theme tune? At least people know that.

Needless to say we have not returned, because quite frankly, if I want to make a t*t out of myself in front of a roomful of people I will just go and audition for the X-Factor.  Take heed, dear readers. These groups are not for the faint hearted.  Either be mentally ready with every nursery rhyme ever written, oh and sit to the leaders right, or you could always just belt out, Neighbours....everybody needs good neighbours....".

Thanks for reading and I would love to hear any of your baby group disasters to make me feel a little better!

post pregnancy weight loss in hindi | Disappointment

post pregnancy weight loss in hindi

There was awhile there that I felt ahead of the game. I felt connected to my purpose for being a stay-at-home mother: to support my children and raise them to be the people that God wants them to be, to raise them in a manner that my husband and I had discussed was important to us, to be the familiar face they see day in and day out as Daddy goes to work or as we move from state to state and Daddy eventually goes back to sea, to teach them lifes little lessons as they naturally pop up during the day, and to enjoy these years that slip by so quickly. I struggled at times, especially when teething babies kept me awake at night for days or weeks or when sickness swept through our house and I felt overwhelmed, overworked, overtired. I struggled when I felt my husband had an easier load than I did (and he felt the same way about me-- the grass is always greener?). One thing that remained consistent then is that I would say, "Im struggling today, right now. This is a phase." I felt it in my heart. I didnt want to miss a moment. I wanted to hold on to each day and pull from it every last memory I could, every sticky hug, every wet kiss, every skinned knee I magically healed with momma powers, every squeal of glee when Daddy walked in the door... I loved it. I loved doing it. I loved being there and experiencing the sour infant breath as a baby slept on my chest. I loved rolling my eyes at the arguments of our oldest, a preschooler too big for his britches; his logic makes me laugh out loud.

Lately... lately Im missing my joy. I catch glimpses and glimmers of my old feelings every now and then. I dont know what it is. I feel like we are always home, always wondering what we should do with our day, always figuring out how to dwindle the long evening hours now that the time has changed and it is too dark (and too mosquito ridden) to play outside. I feel like I miss our old duty station and miss our old friends. I feel like I miss our old calendar that always had something fun to do on it, that sparked our kids imaginations. I feel like we are always telling them to go to the playroom here at our new house. I feel like too many toys find their way around this new house-- maybe it is the open floor plan-- but Im constantly tripping on Legos and Duplos and Matchbox cars; it feels cluttered which makes me feel grumpy. I feel far away from my family.

Most of all, I feel like Im always playing catch up. Im late to nearly everything I have planned lately. It takes me much longer to get around here than Im used to. The roads are strange. The way to get places just feels winding. Everything is a trek. I dont know where to run out and get a good lunch with the boys in tow and so Ive eaten much more drive-through chicken here than I would care to think about. I feel like Im playing catch up with my calendar and catch up with my kids. Instead of focusing them in fun activities, Im breaking up fights and disagreements. Instead of keeping their hands busy, Im sending them to the other room. Instead of listening to them, Im telling them to keep it down.

I need a change! Ive hit the winter blues early. Having a nagging cold doesnt help. Having toddlers in the exceptionally trying toddler phase hasnt helped (read "Revolution #9"). I feel like each day Im looking for a break-- when can I catch a break?-- instead of taking control of the day, praying over various aspects of our day, praying over our kids. I need to go back to the basics and stop struggling through these days.

I re-read a blog post I wrote awhile ago called "Marthas and Marys," written after I read When Mothers Pray: Bringing Gods Power and Blessing to Your Childrens Lives by Cheri Fuller. Thats the mom I want to be again.

It is time for a fresh start.

pregnancy weight loss morning sickness | IVF 5 TIMES MORE COMPLICATIONS IN BABIES

pregnancy weight loss morning sickness

Even though Im an advocate of getting pregnant naturally, even I was surprised to hear that babies born through IVF have five times the risk of complications such as early infant death, stillbirth and prematurity. What is even more surprising is that the figures excluded women with multiple births.  One researcher who previously link IVF with a higher incidence of birth defects described something called "hormonal hangover" which was his way of describing how fertility drugs can stay in a womans system and affect the uterus and the placenta.

SEE ALSO: IVF OVER 40 (getpregnantover40.com)

According to the article:
"Professor Davies also warned that there is an ‘urgent need’ to track the long-term health of babies born through IVF.
He added: ‘It is appropriate that we are informed of the risks associated with the therapy and the source of that risk, so we can make informed decisions.’
Around 50,000 women in the UK have IVF each year leading to 17,000 births. Dr Geeta Nargund, medical director of the London Create fertility clinic, said doctors should make IVF ‘as safe as possible’ by not using high doses of drugs."

pregnancy weight loss tumblr | My true love

pregnancy weight loss tumblr

Hello and happy Friday!  Today I thought I would share with you a new piece in my wardrobe that I am deeply in love with.  This jumper hasnt been off my back since I got it and whilst you may think I am over-exaggerating, I think friends and family have questioned if I actually own any other clothes!! Introducing, my new BFF (!), the All Saints Itat Shrug!

First of all, I adore All Saints.  I think the quality of the clothes is just amazing and very long lasting. Items wash well and are true investment pieces. I had completely fallen in love with this top when I saw it back in October, and I finally purchased it during a 20% event just before Christmas (they seem to have a 20% event most months).  I got it in the grey marl shade, but there is a dark grey, black and taupe available too. The fit is loose with quite fitted sleeves, and there is this lovely drape detail at the front where the material overlaps on itself.  But thats not all!

This is no ordinary jumper.  What I love about this top is that it turns into a cardigan too! You flick the V section behind your head and voila! A cardigan!! (And it actually looks like a lovely cardigan, it doesnt look like you have just wrapped something over your head).

The Itat shrug is still available at All Saints here and the dark grey version appears to have gone in the sale for £39! Versatile, comfy and stylish...I think my love affair with this piece will be a long one!

Thank you for reading and have a wonderful weekend!

baby losing weight in hospital | Not my favorite duty station

baby losing weight in hospital

Picture taken by April McTaggart

Every time we move, I end up missing our last duty station. I really miss our last duty station right now. I keep thinking, "This is not my favorite place to live." Before we moved, everyone kept telling me how awesome it is in South Carolina and how much I will love it here. Now that we are here, I feel like, "Well, we cant do this or that with two two-year olds..." or "In North Carolina, I took all three boys all over the place..."

I think it is totally natural to feel this way. However, I have to keep it in check!

I hated our first duty station. I moved from California to New Hampshire, right on the Maine border, in January. By myself. My husbands submarine was a month late. And I didnt have his boat email address at the time or any idea what an FRG or ombudsman was. I was alone and it was cold. There was an ice storm and our Jeep was encased in literally an inch of ice. There was so much snow and my winter shoes consisted of Converse and stiletto leather boots from Nine West. I wasnt prepared. By the time we moved, I was so over the Noreasters and decked out in Columbia and Ugg Boots. Being from Northern California, I didnt think the summers were "hot," as my local neighbors kept telling me they would be. I was over all of it and ready to get the heck out of there and on our way to Hawaii.

When we arrived in Hawaii, I realized I missed this great coffee shop in New Hampshire. And that the hospital I gave birth to our first son in was really, really nice. And that I loved my midwife. I missed walking along the New Hampshire coast. I missed a lot of really delicious local restaurants. Even more so, I realized I had a really bad attitude the entire time we lived in New Hampshire. I didnt like it there and I didnt want to like it there. Things that were so annoying there at the time were funny after we moved. For instance, our apartment complex plowed the parking lots really early in the morning. This meant that by the time I was ready to leave, there would be a snow drift up to the back of our Jeeps rear window that had somehow iced over. My pregnant self would have to knock on our next door neighbors door to again ask to borrow their snow shovel ("When are you going to buy one of these, dearie?" "I dont know...") to chip the Jeep out so I could drive to my OB appointment. I hated doing that at the time, but it makes me laugh now thinking about it.

I vowed that I wouldnt be such a spoil sport at our next duty stations. They dont have to be my favorite places to live and maybe I wouldnt ever want to live there in "real life," you know, not sent-here-by-the-military life. I loved living in Hawaii, but that was easy. My family used to vacation there and I love the beach. I loved the food. I loved our house and where it was located. I loved my neighbors. I had a harder time when we first moved to North Carolina. I had a hard time making friends. We lived way out in the country when we first moved there and everything was a bit of a drive; we eventually outgrew our living arrangements and felt very cramped at home (read "Across town move"). Then we moved to a house with a great yard, a great playroom, and a great location. We thrived. We loved it there. We loved the grocery stores, how many things there were to do with the kids, how inexpensive everything was. We loved the food. We loved the friends we made and the playdates we had; I loved the twin group and their awesome twice yearly consignment sale. We talk about how we want to go back after my husband retires.

Then we moved to South Carolina. We had a rocky start here, a rough time unpacking. Perhaps that was the problem. But then we settled in and there are so many things that I keep comparing to North Carolina. The grocery store situation here is awful. Everything is a drive, like twenty or thirty minutes. I was nervous about moving our asthmatic toddler and the flu shot situation here really put a bad taste in my mouth (read "2013 flu shots"). There seems to be a lot of areas around here that you should avoid at night (not that we go out a lot at night, but we do like to go get ice cream after dinner). I miss our baby-sitters in North Carolina; we still dont have a regular baby-sitter here and Im nervous leaving our asthmatic toddler with someone new (read "0-2 years old: twin must-haves").

When we moved here, people who had been stationed here before gave us a list of areas that we should move to. We debated for awhile what we wanted to do. Do we want to live out in town near things to do with our kids? Or do we want to live near my husbands work? Since we are living in South Carolina for an undetermined amount of time-- could be six months, could be two years-- we decided that living near my husbands work was the priority (read "STA-21 officers program"). That has been the silver lining. He still hasnt classed up yet, but when he does go in for various jobs, he comes home at lunch, or pops in before his next brief. When he does start school, hell be able to come home for dinner or to help put the kids to bed. I really like that. We have both agreed that if we were ever stationed here for a significant amount of time that we would want to choose a different area to live. For now, being here for my husband to go to through school and with such a young family, I do think we made the right the decision. (It doesnt hurt that we absolutely love our house and our neighborhood!)

So Im going to hang in there. Maybe Im just really missing our old friends and our old list of activities. I really liked the childrens museum in North Carolina and the boys loved going there each week; our oldest loved the camps we sent him to there. Maybe Im missing our grocery stores (we lived near a lot of awesome grocery stores). Maybe Im still settling in here. Whatever it is, Im going to give it some time and look for the best here. I dont want to say that I only have to make it work for two years, maximum, but it is true. We only have a little time here and I want to enjoy it to the fullest. Im going to find activities for our kids and Im going to make friends with my neighbors. Im going to put my best foot forward and, when we move again, Ill have no regrets.

rapid pregnancy weight loss | My Grannys Purse Review

rapid pregnancy weight loss

Toddlers appear to have an affinity for items and objects that they shouldnt really have. When you have to try and keep a toddler amused, say at a restaurant or on an aeroplane, the colouring pencils and book you try and distract them with tend to go flying over your head as they proceed to empty out the contents of your handbag.  There are way too many objects and treasures to pull out and explore in a handbag!

Our family recently went out for an evening meal and our daughter came too, and, whilst she is very well behaved (most of the time), sitting still at the table is quite a feat.  My mum then pulled out this amazing little book that she had bought, and my daughter thought it was the best thing. Ever.

My Grannys Purse is a book by Paul Hanson and it is a book that is a purse.  Or a purse that is a book. Its thick cardboard pages are bound together and constructed so it appears as though you are rummaging through Grandmas actual handbag. Amazing. There is lots of detail to each page and lovely little phrases throughout which mirror the relationship between what mums say and what Grandmas say.  But, thats about as much words as you get in this book as its not about the reading. This book / purse is all about imagination and exploring.  You can remove a pair of funky spectacles from their case and try them on, or peer into Grandmas mirror.

There are places to stick photographs of Grandma and your little one too, to personalise the book. My daughter thought her dreams had come true looking in this book, and it kept her entertained throughout our meal. She even got to try on a selection of diamond rings! The next morning, as soon as my daughter woke up she was asking for her handbag!

My Grannys Purse retails around £10 and there is also a mummys purse book in the series that I will be looking out for. I love this book for its unique idea and because it fits perfectly with that toddler age of intrigue and wanting to explore. Its absolutely perfect for travelling with little ones or when you need to keep them still and entertained. It would make a lovely gift too.

Have you read this book before? Do you know of any other toddler books that are similar? Comments below please and as always thanks for reading.

baby weight loss more than 11 | My labour story Part two

baby weight loss more than 11

Heres part two of my labour story of my second baby.  For part one you can head over here if you missed it, but we left it that I was on all fours and only 4cm dilated.

You cant really put into words the pain and intensity of contractions, and I certainly dont want to scare anyone who is pregnant or plans to have a baby in the future. I mean we all know it hurts. It really hurts. But its a pain unlike any other, its a pain that has a purpose.  And no matter how many babies I see, I still cant quite believe the miracle that is pregnancy and child birth.

The contractions were getting stronger and more close together so I tried gas and air that I immediately didnt like.  It just made me feel really sick having a plastic mouthpiece in my mouth and I think it also made me lose focus of my breathing technique that so far had been quite effective.  The gas and air just got thrown on the bed and I resumed focusing on breathing and counting out loud to ten until the contraction had passed.

I think alot of people perceive labour to be this one long excruciating pain, when in fact inbetween contractions you are pretty pain free.  This kept me going.  I knew if I could just count up to ten, by the time I got to ten the pain would have passed and I would have some respite.  I really tried to stay in the moment and not even think of the next contraction.

By around 2am my contractions were so intense that I began to doubt myself and I felt so overwhelmed. I remember telling my husband he had better get me an epidural ASAP (even though an hour before Id bleated on about a natural birth!!!). The midwife was amazing and just kept telling me I could do it and to hold on for a bit longer. I can remember arguing with her I couldnt.  At some point I can remember saying Id had enough, it was all too much.   The midwife agreed to examine me and found I was around 8cm! I was nearly nearly there, I could do it! I think she did a sweep at this point to help my cervix fully dilate.

As the intensity grew to the point that I felt I could take no more, a really strange feeling came over me which I cant describe. My body just felt so different, I felt shaky and weird and a little scared.  I can then remember my waters breaking and the midwife opening a delivery pack.

At the point I thought I could take no more we had reached the point of pushing.  And this gave me a renewed sense of purpose.  Whilst the contractions were still there, I had a renewed purpose, I had to push as hard as I could to see my baby.

I wont lie, I was scared at this point. Id had an epidural with my first daughter so all of the sensations were new. I told the midwife there was no way I was pushing, I was just going to wait it out, to which she laughed and told me I didnt have a choice.

The pushing was hard and exhausting (think doing a giant poo) and my husband said he could actually see my stomach shrinking as baby was being pushed down.  I cant put into words how I felt or what my body was doing.  My body just completely took over and I just knew I had to push and push. Every single part of my being was focusing on pushing this baby out.  A monkey could have delivered my baby and I wouldnt have noticed.

It was intense but the most amazing experience. Three hours after arriving on the ward and our daughter, baby LL was born.  It was love at first sight.

I delivered the placenta naturally after the cord had stopped pulsating, and to me this was a breeze compared to birthing a baby.

I needed some stitches afterwards, but just 6 hours later we were discharged home and I dont think my parents could quite believe it when we walked into our home holding our new baby girl.

The care I received was faultless and as hard as it was, I would do it all again in a heartbeat.  I know not every birth is the same and I would never compare this birth to the birth of my daughter where I had an epidural. But I feel so lucky to have experienced a different type of labour and birth.

Welcome to the world LL xxx

realistic pregnancy weight loss | A very quick smokey eye

realistic pregnancy weight loss

I love playing about with my eye make-up, but I often find I am simultaneously trying to get my daughter from emptying my underwear drawer or yelling at my husband when he asks me where his wallet is for the tenth time (I dont know!).  This means that my eye make-up needs to be quick and easy.  At weekends, I can take my time a bit more and I tend to play about with shadows and colours, but during the week, speed is the number one priority. That and trying to not resemble a panda.

Whilst I am a fan of the eye flick (you can read my tutorial here) I find that the eye flick can sometimes look a little harsh, especially if Im going for a more natural look. My new trick is a bit of a smokey eye using nothing more than a base cream shadow, an eye-liner pen and a cotton bud. It really is that simple and the great thing is that you dont have to be great applying your eye-liner, you just sort of whack it on and smudge!

1. My favourite cream shadow to use as a base is Macs Brule. Its a subtle cream colour without being too pale and enables you to blend colours on top.

2. I apply the shadow all over the lid using a brush or my fingers.

3. I am using Loreal Super Liner in black at the moment.  You could use any eye-liner.

4. Applying this to the upper lid, I just dot it along the lash line.  It doesnt matter if its not a perfect line as you are going to be smudging it anyway.

5. I then take a cotton bud and gentle smudge the eye-liner along my upper lid to get rid of the line and to leave a more smokey and blended appearance.

6. To the bottom lid you could either rub the cotton bud for a bit of definition, or, I like to use a bit of colour from the Urban Decay Naked palette, I quite like Hustle and or Darkhorse at the moment.

7. The result is a very quick and simple smokey eye.  Its just enough for a day look without looking like I am heading to the nearest party and, because you have smudged the eye-liner in, I find it is quite long wearing to.

Hope that gives you some smokey eye inspiration!
Happy Friday and thanks for reading!

baby losing weight newborn | Pregnancy Blog Week 30

baby losing weight newborn

For some reason, entering week 30 has really made me think that I havent got long to go at all.  10 weeks really doesnt sound like a very long time to me, and I cant quite believe that 30 weeks of this pregnancy have gone by already!

I have felt quite well this last week, and apart from a slight hiccup on Friday night, there have been no Braxton Hicks or false labour moments! Ok, ok, so you want to hear about the hiccup on Friday night.

Basically, I have been getting really fed up of my hair.  Its so long now and takes so long to dry that I have debated whether to just cut it all off and be done with it. Usually when I start thinking these thoughts, I change the colour a little and then I like my hair for a few more months.

So, I saw some hair dye in Boots that gave you a bronde type of colour (not quite blonde but not quite brown).  You apply the dye with a little brush rather than applying it to your whole head and I thought this sounded fantastic as it meant the colour wasnt coming into direct contact with my scalp, and therefore would be a better alternative during pregnancy. All I can say is that home alone with my daughter on Friday night, a few hours later and my hair had turned a really lovely streaky shade of orange!!!

At 7pm, I rushed to Boots with a tired toddler in tow, and orange hair in a bun (I actually hid from someone I knew because I thought it looked that bad!!!!). I was a bit dubious of the bottles claiming to completely strip my hair of the colour, so I opted for another hair colour to mask my orange barnet.

Now, I picked up dark blonde, and whilst my hair colour is no longer orange, its also darker than I wanted (I had originally wanted to go lighter).  I spent the next few hours sitting staring at my hair and then, in a bid to almost cause myself more pain, I started Googling if you should dye your hair whilst pregnant (bearing in mind I had already dyed it).

I have to say, no one has actually noticed my hair colour change.  I had to tell my husband what I had done before he realised and my friends are none the wiser (unless everyone is just being very kind).  I wouldnt mind so much, but Ive dyed my hair a funny shade of orange at least three times now.  I thought you were meant to get wiser as you got older??????

But enough about my hair disaster which I am completely blaming on pregnancy hormones (though I think we all know thats no excuse) back to baby news.

We have finally bought a new pram, a new bed for our daughter (so her bed can convert back into the cot), and a new cot mattress.  As I type this, I am waiting for the deliveries to arrive, but I have a sneaky suspicion that I am going to have to wait in all day, and then they will come at 5pm or something.  Grrrrrr.

Baby is also moving lots this afternoon.  And we also dont have a name. I have to have a name picked out ready, because there is no way I can just come up with one on the spot after labour.  Every night me and my husband debate a lengthy list of boys and girls names.  But its ok, we have another ten weeks to decide!!! Eeeek!

Thanks for reading and have a lovely weekend,

baby losing weight nursing | Why I dont want my daughter to hear the F word

baby losing weight nursing

As you may or not know, Im currently in the last trimester of my second pregnancy. A few weeks ago, I was stood in the front of the mirror. Normally, I am relatively happy with my body shape and the curves that pregnancy brings. But on this particular day, all I could see were my imperfections, and lots of them.  None of my clothes looked right, I thought my bum and hips looked enormous, and at least 100 times bigger than the previous day. Quite frankly I didnt like what I saw.  And it was then I said it.

I turned to my husband and said, Do you think I look really fat today?. My husband immediately shot a glance towards the corner of the room where our three year daughter was happily spinning around in her princess costume. I shut up straight away. I dont want my daughter hearing that word from me ever again.

For me, saying that word in front of my daughter meant that I was introducing her to this inherent and dangerous concept in our society. Lets face it, there isnt a day that goes by without the fat/thin/weight debate rearing its head.  The words fat and thin are banded about like they are commonplace.

I wonder how damaged the next generation will be.  Bombarded with cleverly airbrushed images, selfies galore and the impossible pressure to look like an image that is clearly unattainable

Where has normal gone in all of this? Our view of bodies is so skewed, that we look in disgust if we have cellulite, if our bums are a bit bigger or wobble, or at our changing and ageing body shapes.  Where is the wonder at how amazing our bodies are? That are legs walk us around every day? That we have a body that functions? That we are able to run after our children?

To me, its not about size or shape. Its recognising what is normal and thats we have lost. And its up to me to teach my daughter about a normal, healthy body.  Of loving your body, accepting every part of it, being grateful for every part of it.  Before she sees the sadness in the world of how we really have lost the plot with body image.

Thats why I will never stand in front of the mirror again and utter those stupid, stupid words.  By teaching my daughter, I guess I have to teach myself too. Life is too short and our bodies are way too precious.

weight loss and gain during pregnancy | Potty training 2 5 year old twin boys

weight loss and gain during pregnancy

We potty trained our oldest when he was three years old-- hes now five years old-- and I am so ready to have our toddlers potty trained as well. However, my husband and I decided awhile ago that we wouldnt potty train our twin boys until they turned three. What led us to that decision?

When our first was a little guy, I dabbled in potty training. I would put him in underwear at 18-months and let him feel what it was like without a diaper. We brought him to the restroom with us and worked on his "potty vocabulary." We encouraged him to try to use the restroom. We asked him when his diaper was full if he was stinky... on and on. We never really pushed the potty training, but we highly encouraged it.

By the time he turned three, he had decided that potty training was not for him. Diapers were great. I would ask if he wanted to use the potty and he said, "No," every time. In fact, he never used the potty until we actually made him potty train. But, when he was just past three and we made him potty train, he exceeded the readiness list (read "Why not?") and we potty trained him days and nights all at once. Why not do it that way?

Our toddlers have thrown us a curve ball. While our oldest demonstrated zero interest in potty training, our toddlers are super excited about it. They are two and half years old right now and love talking about the potty. They love when their older brother uses the potty. They love when we are in the bathroom, either to use the restroom ourselves or to brush their teeth, take a bath, whatever it is that brings us into the glorious restroom. They have used the restroom multiple times. One of them even told us-- on his own initiative-- that he needed to use the restroom for a larger function than just tinkling. Our oldest would never have done that in a million years. In fact, when asked at the same age, he told me, "Ive got my diaper."

Which brings us to another big difference between our oldest and our two toddlers. While D was also a late talker, when he started talking, he really started talking. Our toddlers are dragging in their vocabulary. Right now they are playing and talking and I can make out about 20% of the words they are saying. When Im involved in what they are doing, not just eavesdropping, I can get that number to 50% or so. They are in the midst of this phase where they throw fits about everything. At the park the other day, one of our toddlers threw an epic meltdown when I told him to stop touching things in the parks public restroom (ew, ew, ew, ew).

There are days when the toddlers shake our resolve regarding putting off potty training. A week or so ago, one of our toddlers was obsessed with the restroom. He told us before he had to go potty, after he went potty, and wanted his diaper changed if it was the slightest bit wet. When we were changing a barely wet diaper for him to run and finish in the potty, we thought, "Should we?" We debated the pros and cons, if we wanted to or not. While we see many pros, the con-- their ability to communicate-- remains the same.

Which leads me back to how we potty trained our oldest. Yes, we made him potty train. He was over three years old and literally demonstrated every bullet on the readiness list (on every readiness list I read). When we kicked off the potty training, we handed the responsibility over to him. He became responsible for telling me the timer went off and it was time to try. He became responsible for going potty before we left the house. He became responsible for telling me he had to go potty when we were out and so we had enough time to get to a restroom. He became responsible when he had accidents after he was potty trained. I dont see the toddlers rising to this occasion. I watch them and wonder, but at the end of it, I dont see them taking this on. I see me pushing two toddlers to try. I see me cleaning up accidents for weeks and weeks with little progress. I see a year or more of over night diapers and just-in-case pull ups and carpet cleaner and extra clothes when we leave the house. That is not how I want to potty train.

And so we wait. We wait and let them build their potty vocabulary. We give them praise and a treat when they ask to use the potty. We change their diapers when they ask and make sure to clean up stinky diapers right away (not that anyone with a nose would be able to tolerate a toddler in a stinky diaper for more than 30 seconds anyways). We are viewing potty training in a different light. Potty training is a process and there is a lot that builds up to it. If we teach them that using the potty is the end goal and the words they need to know before switching to underwear all the time, they will comprehend what their role is much more than throwing it all at them at once. If we teach them to understand "no" and "wait," then they will have more control over themselves when we cant access a bathroom immediately or when we tell them accidents happen but not once you are potty trained.

This is not to say that I do not have a countdown until we get our youngest two kids out of diapers: 5 or 6 months. Now if only we could skip the whole "potty training process" and jump straight to three potty trained kids. :)

(Note: we did allow our oldest a period of leniency when he was working on potty training. It is hard to learn that it takes longer to get to a bathroom when you are at a grocery store than at home or that sometimes Momma doesnt know where a bathroom is and has to find it, like at a big mall. However, once he was potty trained, we told him he needs to make it to a bathroom. Again, we made exceptions after big changes that initiated backsliding, like when he was having problems with a bully at preschool and things such as that.)

Blogs I wrote on potty training our oldest:
"Try to see it my way"
"Why not?"
"Follow-up on potty training"

post pregnancy weight loss quickly | Flight Essentials

post pregnancy weight loss quickly

Hello everyone, I hope you are all well. As you read this I will be somewhere in America on holiday with my husband and daughter.  I thought Id do a quick post as to my plane essentials. I love the anticipation of holidays, so I have been doing alot of YouTube watching and blog reading to find out what products are recommended for travel.  Without further ado, heres my top flight essentials.

Soap and Glory Sexy Mother Blusher
I had never tried a cream blush before, but I am now converted.  This blush stick has a lovely creamy texture and blends in easily.  I plan to pop this on before we arrive at our destination so my cheeks will have that pinky glow even if my skin is far from glowing naturally. This is such a convenient stick and less messy than carrying my blush powder and brush.

Deodorant
I will never use anything other than Dove deodorant.  This is a staple.

Lip balm and hand cream
Obviously.

Pain relief sachets
As a mum, I always have to be within an arms reach of some kind of pain relief, just in case of sudden fever or pain.  These sachets are fantastic as they contain a single recommended does of paracetamol and ibuprofen. They are the perfect size for popping in your bag and for travel.

Toothbrush and toothpaste
I am that strange lady that always steals hotel toiletries.  This is a stolen toothbrush from somewhere.  Its perfect for the plane.  Nobody likes fuzzy teeth.

Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask
I had read lots of rave reviews of this product so thought I would give it a go. Normally when I travel, no matter how much moisturiser I put on, my skin resembles that of an iguana when I disembark the plane. My plan is to go bare faced for the flight, with just my eyebrows done and some mascara.  I then plan to apply this mask throughout the flight.  The mask is a clear gel, and after only a few minutes of applying it, I find it has sunk into my skin.  Its deeply moisturising and my skin looks healthy and plump after using it. It contains gorgeous ingredients such as apricot kernel, avocado oil and mango butters and it smells delicious. The best bit is you dont have to wash it off as it is absorbed into the skin.

So thats my plane essentials and Im ready to go! Are there any flight essentials that I have missed? Comments below please!

baby weight loss success stories | Personalised Books PenWizard

baby weight loss success stories

I adore personalised gifts, so when Penwizard offered me the opportunity to review one of their personalised books, I jumped at the chance! I think personalised gifts are lovely to give, and it can make gift giving that little bit easier when you have taken the time to personalise a product.

Penwizards website is very simple and easy to use and what I particularity like is that for a number of their books you get to read a preview of what the final edit will look like.  Whilst this is very helpful, it also meant that me and my daughter spent a considerable amount of time picking our book, looking at characters and seeing what we would like if we starred in Peppa Pig!!! You can choose from titles like Peppa Pig, Ben and Holly, In The Night Garden and princess and knight books. Some books offer the personalisation through the childs name, whilst with others you can design the characters to personalise and then add a name too.

After much discussion, me and my daughter eventually chose a Peppa Pig My Daddy book and we set about with our creation! My daughter helped pick her daddys hair colour and style, facial hair and eye colour.  We did this again for my daughter, much to my daughters delight!  A few quick checks and our book was done!! I ordered the book on Thursday evening and by Saturday morning our shiny new book featuring two special characters had arrived!!!

The quality of the book is fantastic and even the little details, like a summary of the story with our personalised pictures on the back of the book is a lovely touch.  These books are amazing for any upcoming childrens birthdays or even for mums and dads from their little ones for birthdays or mothers and fathers day. You can visit the Penwizard website here and for my lovely readers I have a special 15% discount code on all orders!  Just enter the code: 5625849 at checkout to apply your discount.

This personalised book was gifted to me by Penwizard, but this review is entirely my own opinion and review of the book.  I would definitely buy again and I highly recommend their site! x

mumsnet pregnancy weight lose | The advice you shouldnt listen too

mumsnet pregnancy weight lose

If I hear the phrase, sleep when baby sleeps, I may just scream and pack my bags to live in the mountains with a herd of goats.  When you have a baby, well meaning advice comes at your from all angles, from friends and family to random comments from strangers and the darn right bizarre from our friend Mr.Google.  So forget what advice youve been given. Heres the truth.

Sleep when baby sleeps.
Argh! How many times have I heard this one? Only every day of my new-baby sleep deprived life. Have you ever tried it?  Babies are born with a highly tuned set of skills when born, this includes with ninja precision timing their sleeps to coincide with: a)someone knocking at the door b)workmen drilling outside c) the telephone ringing d)all of the above or my personal favourite e) not sleeping and becoming wide awake the moment you put them in their cot. My advice? If you cant sleep in the day, dont worry about it.  In all honesty you are going to feel absolutely exhausted anyway.  If you can nap, sure, go for it.  If you cant, dont beat yourself up about it. Try and have at least five minutes to yourself having a cup of tea and maybe updating yourself with the world of celebrity gossip on your phone (thats just me then).

Dont do housework.
Everyone says you shouldnt do any housework when youre a new mum, which is obviously true in those first few weeks.  However, beyond that, unless you want to eat off paper plates and chase wild raccoons from the site which was once your kitchen, youre going to have to tidy up at some point. My advice? Break the tasks down and have a simple aim each day, even if that one thing is to vacuum or hide the mess under the stairs.

Dont do the ironing.
My tip? I like to apply the four question rule with ironing. Hold the item up and ask yourself these four questions...
Does it need ironing?
Will you wear it this week?
Would anyone notice if it wasnt ironed?
Is it yours?
If you get four yess then give it a little iron.  Any nos and it goes back in the pile. Youre welcome.

The magic cure.
Everyone has a magic cure for whatever problem you have with your baby. The magic fix might be gripe water, a dummy, drinking herbal tea or eating your own placenta to cure an unsettled baby, colic or constipation.  But guess what? There are as many cures as there are babies.  There is no quick fix.  Accept it and go with your gut, and dont be disappointed if running round the garden three times naked wont cure your babies sleeplessness.

You are doing amazing.
This is the one piece of advice I think any parent needs to be reminded of. Being a parent is hard bloody work, whether you are a parent to a newborn, toddler or teenager.  We are all just trying our best to raise happy and healthy individuals. We compare ourselves constantly to what others are doing, questioning every decision we make, but you know what? The majority of the time youve got it right because you are doing whats right for you and your little one.  Forget that mums facebook feed with her oh-so-brilliant crafts. Forget the new mum with the amazing Instagram. Some days? Its fine if your biggest achievement was brushing your teeth.  Hang on in there. You really are doing an amazing job.
